Genesis today announced the opening of Genesis Design California in El Segundo. This small new design studio house 45 team members and will focus on the North American market. It’s a milestone for the growth of the brand, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, while caught in the crossfire of Trump’s trade wars.
“Genesis Design California embeds our team directly in the U.S. market, ensuring we design vehicles that truly resonate with North American customers,” said José Muñoz, president & CEO of Genesis. “The investment in this facility and the jobs it is creating are emblematic of our long-term commitment to North America. In just 10 short years, Genesis has created an innovative design identity tied directly to its Korean cultural heritage. This studio will play a central role in shaping generations of new products that deepen the emotional connection between our brand and the customers we serve.”
Genesis Design California covers 80,000 square feet. It is said to complement existing design studios in Seoul and Frankfurt, Germany. The opening of Genesis Design California brings all three teams together, enabling a 24-hour interconnected and collaborative global work process. The studio responsibility is creative work, from production and advanced automotive projects to explorations in air mobility, robotics, and CMF trend research. “The team will also develop virtual imagery and films to support product storytelling, reinforcing Genesis’s vision of design as a multidisciplinary practice that extends beyond the traditional automotive landscape.”
“Team members have “natural and artful spaces for focus and creativity beyond the traditional office environment,” ranging from those designed for quiet solitary work to bustling design lab experimentation, including:
- Colors, materials and finishes studio.
- Clay modeling & 3D printing workshop.
- Digital design lab.
- Library for discussion, research and reflection, including a modern tea platform inspired by the brand’s distinctly Korean heritage.
- Open workspace featuring a variety of collaborative breakout spaces and flexible seating.
- Large, bright office and conference spaces.
- Private spaces enclosed in soft acoustic felt for a calming experience.
- Outdoor spaces and lounge areas inspired by traditional Korean gardens and the outdoor aesthetic of Southern California.
- An upper-level patio that can accommodate various uses, such as events and dining.
“At Genesis, design is brand and brand is design,” said Luc Donckerwolke, Chief Creative Officer of Genesis. “Genesis Design California is the embodiment of this. It embraces our distinct Korean identity creating a space that inspires creativity. I cannot wait to see that inspiration come to life in the team’s work.”
About Ken Zino
Ken Zino, editor and publisher of AutoInformed, is a versatile auto industry participant with global experience spanning decades in print and broadcast journalism, as well as social media. He has automobile testing, marketing, public relations and communications experience. He is past president of The International Motor Press Assn, the Detroit Press Club, founding member and first President of the Automotive Press Assn. He is a member of APA, IMPA and the Midwest Automotive Press Assn.
He also brings an historical perspective while citing their contemporary relevance of the work of legendary auto writers such as Ken Purdy, Jim Dunne or Jerry Flint, or writers such as Red Smith, Mark Twain, Thomas Jefferson – all to bring perspective to a chaotic automotive universe.
Above all, decades after he first drove a car, Zino still revels in the sound of the exhaust as the throttle is blipped during a downshift and the driver’s rush that occurs when the entry, apex and exit points of a turn are smoothly and swiftly crossed. It’s the beginning of a perfect lap.
AutoInformed has an editorial philosophy that loves transportation machines of all kinds while promoting critical thinking about the future use of cars and trucks.
Zino builds AutoInformed from his background in automotive journalism starting at Hearst Publishing in New York City on Motor and MotorTech Magazines and car testing where he reviewed hundreds of vehicles in his decade-long stint as the Detroit Bureau Chief of Road & Track magazine. Zino has also worked in Europe, and Asia – now the largest automotive market in the world with China at its center.
