Nissan Recalls LEAF EVs for Bad Rearview Cameras

Nissan North America (Nissan) is recalling ~58,000 model-year 2018-2022 LEAF electric vehicles because damage to the camera harness can cause distortion or loss of the rearview camera display image. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, “Rear Visibility.”

If the rear view image is not available, rearward visibility may be reduced, potentially increasing the risk of a crash. The recalled LEAF models were made at the non-unionized Smyrna, Tennessee assembly plant.

In the required safety defect filing made public by NHTSA today, Nissan said model-year 2019 through 2021 Nissan Altima and model-year 2020-2021 Nissan Sentra vehicles ”are equipped with a similar camera harness design but a higher degree of runout angle in harness routing are subject to Recall 23V628 filed on 8 September 2023.”

The remedy for this potentially deadly safety defect is currently under development. Owner notification letters are not expected to be mailed until 20 March 2024. Dealers were notified on 7 February 2024.
