April Japanese Automaking Surges with $13 Billion in Exports

The strong recovery is bad news for the Detroit Three since many of the vehicles will be shipped to North America, by far the largest export market for Japanese automakers. More than 157,000 vehicles were shipped to North America, with 140,000 of those sent the United States, where the new vehicle market is slowly growing once again. Continue reading

Volkswagen Group April Sales at 732,000 are Up 6%

The Volkswagen Group in Wolfsburg today said sales increased for the month of April to 732,000 vehicles. Compared to April 2011 at 690,800, this represented a 6% gain. Year-to-date VW Group sold 2.89 million vehicles for an increase of 8.6% percent (January-April 2011: 2.66 m). General Motors U.S. April Sales Down 8% in a Growing Market

General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) today reported April sales of 213,387 vehicles in the United States, a decline of 8% in a month that looks to be running at more than 14 million units on a seasonally adjusted basis, an increase of at least 12%. Buick one again posted a decline, this time -25% at 15,450 vehicles, with the mid-size Regal off -37% at 2,850. The compact and less expensive Verona sold 3,000 sedans. This begs the question whether Buick in particularly, perhaps General Motors overall, has been too aggressive in raising prices to boost profitability. The brands aren’t strong enough and the competition remains formidable. Once again Chrysler posted a 20% sales increase to 141,000 vehicles in April, and my bet is GM and Ford are where the growth is coming from to a large degree. Continue reading

New Vehicle Sales in Europe Fall Again in April and Year-to-Date

European sales results are of concern for U.S. taxpayers because they can undermine the results at General Motors and Chrysler, which is controlled by Fiat. Both Opel and Fiat are struggling in Europe. Even at Ford Motor results are negatively affected by Europe, which remains a drag on earnings. Continue reading
