GM has today recalled almost three quarters of a million late-model vehicles for various safety defects. If there is any good news in the latest safety defects, it is they do not involve deadly ignition switches. GM Recalling 2014 Silverado, Sierra Pickups for Bad Airbags
GM is recalling its new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks because of defective airbags. While admitting an embarrassing safety defect on its most recent major product revision, GM told NHTSA in the required recall filing that the welding on the passenger airbag inflator might fracture when the airbag deploys, allowing some gas from the air bag inflator to vent behind the instrument panel, instead of into the air bag. NHTSA Investigation Prompts GM Recalls of SUVs for Fires
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has prompted recalls of more than 249,000 GM SUVs because of fires in the driver’s door caused by a defective electric window motor. Affected are 2006-2007 model year Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Isuzu Ascender and Saab 9-7x models, all from the GMT360 platform. NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation has received a total of 83 complaints, 66 alleging the door module had melted or burned, and the remaining 17 stating that the window switches acted erratically or were inoperative. Twenty-eight of the reports received have led to driver door fires, some of which allege the vehicle was keyed off and unattended. Continue reading

GM Recalls 500,000 2021-22 SUVs for Bad Seat Belts
“The rivet that retains the buckle to the mounting bracket in the left- or right-side third-row seat belt buckle assembly may have been improperly formed,” was the defect cited in a mandatory NHTSA filing made public today. GM had reports of the problem going back to October of 2020. Workers at GM supplier ZF Occupant Safety Systems manufacturing plant in Mexico may have not properly followed processes and inadvertently missed the rivet forming operation. Continue reading →
