American Honda Motor Co. is recalling more than 35,000 model year 2016 Honda Pilot 2wd models because if one of the safety systems – tire pressure monitoring, anti-lock braking or electronic stability control – malfunctions the instrument panel will not illuminate the corresponding warning light. NHTSA Whacks Takata with $70-200 Million Consent Order
The U.S. DOT today issued the largest civil penalty in NHTSA’s history to Takata for violating the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. In an unprecedented move, NHTSA’s authority is being used to accelerate recall repairs to millions of affected vehicles. More than 23 million inflators, 19 million vehicles and 12 automakers are affected by the action. Continue reading

Static Electricity from Wipers Prompts Jeep Recall
The electro-static discharge in the wiper system could feed back into the Body Control Module internal electronics and cause the BCM to fail. A bad BCM could cause the windshield wipers to stop functioning without warning. Continue reading
Volkswagen Recalls 420,000 Cars, SUVs for Bad Airbags
The fix for this safety recall is still under development even though the first field reports of the defect appeared in 2011. NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation has received nine reports from consumers alleging steering wheel clock spring/steering column control module (SCCM) failures in 2012 Volkswagen Passat and CC models. NHTSA opened an investigation last March after VW internal reviews said “low failure rate detected and no impact on vehicle safety” was found at a 2012 meeting. Continue reading

NHTSA Blasts FCA Recalls – Big Fines, Maybe Criminal Charges Coming for Italian Automaker? Litigation Ongoing.
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation, aka ODI, has outlined problems associated with 23 different Fiat Chrysler recalls involving millions of vehicles. These recalls are for serious safety defects and “non-compliances.” Including recalls for fuel systems that can catch fire in rear crashes, defective ignition switches that can disable a vehicle’s air bags and defective air bags that can unexpectedly explode. These defects have caused deaths and serious injuries. Continue reading

Honda Stops Sale, Recalls Acura MDX, RLX for Sudden Braking
American Honda Motor is recalling model year 2014-2015 Acura MDX 2wd and AWD, and 2014 RLX and RLX Hybrid vehicles. for sudden braking. In the latest example of bogus computer programming, a growing automaker safety defect problem, Honda’s so-called Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) can incorrectly interpret as obstacles roadside metal fences or guardrails and unexpectedly apply the brakes with full force.
