NHTSA Hastens Replacements of Deadly Takata Air Bags

There are currently 46 million recalled Takata air bag inflators in 29 million vehicles in the United States. A combination of time, environmental moisture and cycling high temperatures contribute to the degradation of the ammonium nitrate propellant in the inflators. Such degradation can cause the propellant to burn too quickly, rupturing the inflator module and sending shrapnel through the air bag and into the vehicle’s cabin. Continue reading

Only at BMW is the supplier Takata responsible for once again defective welds on its PSDI-X inflator. The Toyota recall involves Chinese supplier ARC Qing Hua (Xian) Automotive Company. Volvo did not name the supplier. Continue reading

Can Another Exploding Airbag Be the Fix for Interior Deaths?

With intense engineering, some of these problems could be dealt with by passive solutions. This could be far less expensive than adding another airbag to every new vehicle. It is worth intense study because explosive devices, as Takata conclusively proved, can go off at the wrong time with deadly consequences.

FCA US Eliminates Use of Non-Desiccated Ammonium Nitrate Takata Air-bag Inflators

Unsold vehicles that are so-equipped will be identified for customers. These customers will also be advised that the vehicles will be recalled in the future. They are not currently subject to recall. Autoliv Confirms it is Taking Business Away from Takata

Swedish Autoliv, a global automotive safety supplier, says it now has agreements with “several different OEM’s for new supply capacity of up to 25 million airbag inflators for delivery during 2015 and 2016.” This of course is a direct fallout from the Takata airbag inflator recall. Honda Pays Largest NHTSA Fine in History for Takata and other Safety Cover Ups

Japanese Price Fixing Scandal Expands with Two More Indictments and Prison Sentences for Three Takata Executives

Including Hayashi and Nonoyama, 21 companies and 26 executives thus far have been charged in the Justice Department’s ongoing investigation into the automotive parts industry. To date, more than $1.6 billion in criminal fines have been obtained and seventeen of the charged executives have been sentenced to serve time in U.S. prisons or have entered into plea agreements calling for significant prison sentences. GM Recalling 2014 Silverado, Sierra Pickups for Bad Airbags

GM is recalling its new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks because of defective airbags. While admitting an embarrassing safety defect on its most recent major product revision, GM told NHTSA in the required recall filing that the welding on the passenger airbag inflator might fracture when the airbag deploys, allowing some gas from the air bag inflator to vent behind the instrument panel, instead of into the air bag.
