Chrysler (FCA US) is recalling ~62,000 2019-2023 model year Jeep Cherokee vehicles. The Dauch Corporation supplied power transfer unit (PTU) may fail resulting in the sudden loss of power or parked vehicle rollaways. The driver may notice a Service 4WD message, noise, vibration or change in drive quality.*
“Some 2019-2023 MY Jeep Cherokee vehicles may have been built with two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU) which may fail internally,” FCA said in the mandatory safety defect filing made public by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) this morning. “A loss of motive power can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. A vehicle that rolls in PARK can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning or injury to others outside the vehicle.”**
The repair for this safety defect is currently under development. Interim owner notification letters explaining the safety risk are not expected to be mailed until 25 June 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy becomes available. Owners may contact FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA’s number for this recall is 40D. - On June 4, 2020, the FCA US LLC (“FCA US”) determined, through the Vehicle Regulations Committee (“VRC”), to conduct FCA US Recall ID W47 (NHTSA Recall ID 20V-343 or 20V343) of certain 2014-2017 MY Jeep Cherokee vehicles for potential PTU input spline failures.
- On December 22, 2022, Transport Canada (TC) sent an information request regarding W47 recall which FCA Canada Inc. (“FCA Canada”) responded to on February 2, 2023.
- In March 2023, FCA US Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (TSRC) organization opened an investigation regarding 2016-2017 MY Jeep Cherokee vehicles for potential PTU input spline failures.
- On April 20, 2023, FCA US determined, through the VRC, to conduct FCA US Recall ID 45A (NHTSA Recall ID 23V-302) of additional 2016-2017 MY Jeep Cherokee vehicles for potential PTU input spline failures.
- On December 12, 2023, TC sent an information request regarding 2014 -2019 Jeep Cherokee PTU which FCA Canada responded to on January 22, 2024.
- On April 23, 2024, NHTSA sent a Pre-Investigation Request regarding Loss of Motive Power (“LOMP”) and FCA US Recall IDs W47 and 45A recall scope of 2016-2019 Jeep Cherokee PTU, which FCA US responded to on May 24, 2024.
In addition to inquiries from NHTSA and TC, FCA US has responded to several inquiries from safety agencies in other countries.
- On January 9, 2025, FCA US determined, through the VRC, to conduct FCA US Recall ID 01C (NHTSA Recall ID 25V-011 or 25V011) of certain 2017-2019 MY Jeep Cherokee vehicles for potential improperly seated snap rings in the PTU.
- On January 21, 2025, TC sent an informal information request regarding the scope of the 01C recall which FCA Canada responded to on January 25, 2025.
- On January 15, 2026, the FCA US TSRC organization opened an investigation into 2019-2023 Jeep Cherokee vehicles for potential PTU failures.
Between January and April 2026, FCA US TSRC Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance) conducted an analysis of failure patterns associated with two-speed PTU replacements. As of April 22, 2026, FCA US is aware of 9 customer assistance records, 387 warranty claims, 5 field reports, and 16 other service records potentially relating to this issue for all markets with dates of receipt ranging from January 9, 2020, to March 19, 2026.
- As of April 22, 2026, FCA US is aware of 1 accident and 1 injury potentially related to this issue for all markets. On April 30, 2026, FCA US determined, through the Vehicle Regulations Committee, that a safety defect exists in certain vehicles.
