GM Recalls Sierra 1500 Trucks for Grilles Flying Off

General Motors (NYSE: GM) is recalling more than 70,000 2022 model GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks equipped with chrome front grille deflectors. The attachments that hold the front grille deflectors in place may fracture, resulting in grille detachment, according to the mandatory safety defect filing made public by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration today.

“This recall only involves GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles with chrome grille deflectors produced after GM’s 2022 model year mid-cycle enhancement for the Sierra (RPOJ22). 2022 model year Sierra 1500 series vehicles produced prior to the mid-cycle enhancement (RPO J21) are not affected by this recall. Vehicles with non-chrome grille deflectors are not part of this recall. 2500/3500 vehicles have a different grille design and are not part of this recall,” GM told NHTSA.

Chronology

  • On 19 January 2024, a GM employee submitted a report to GM’s Speak Up for Safety (SUFS) program after a customer complaint of a front grille deflector detaching from a 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 vehicle while driving.
  • GM opened a product investigation on 27 February 2024, which was closed on 23 May 2024 as no defect trend was identified.
  • On 11 December 2024, GM opened a new product investigation based on a rise in claim rates identified during continued monitoring of deflector detachments on GMC Sierra vehicles. GM’s investigation identified a suspect build window of vehicles with chrome grille deflectors produced after GM’s mid-cycle enhancement for the 2022 Sierra 1500 series. Chrome deflectors supplied during the suspect manufacturing window may have attachment points that may not adequately withstand expected loads. GM identified 1225 field complaints potentially related to this condition, including 4 allegations of an associated accident. These complaints were received by GM between 29 April 2022, and 27 December 2024. GM is not aware of any injuries associated with this condition.
  • On 30 January 2025, GM’s Safety Field Action Decision Authority (SFADA) decided to conduct a safety recall.

The remedy for the safety defect is currently in development. Owner notification letters are not expected to be mailed until 24 March 2025.
