General Motors U.S. Sales Slow in December. Market Up

General Motors posted the company’s highest December sales in five years, as well as its best retail month during all 2012, with deliveries up 5% to 245,733 vehicles year-over-year. Nevertheless, it wasn’t enough to keep up with the rate of growth in the overall market of 9% as big months from Toyota (+9%) and Honda (+26%) skewed the data a bit. Some of the Japanese gains were explained by the recovery from the tsunami and earthquake disasters and ensuing production disruptions more than a year ago, but not all. “Not all” is the question that should be much on the minds of GM executive this year, which will see an ongoing jobless recovery and a battle royal in the marketplace. December U.S. Auto Sales Forecast to Close the Best Year Since 2007

While still well below the annual rates of 16 to 17 million during the last decade, December’s SAAR is 500,000 units higher than predicted for the 2012 full-year pace. Buyers are apparently ignoring the dire predictions and political posturing from that tawdry cast of cliff dwelling and big-money-bought politicians inhabiting the banks of the Potomac river while living in their taxpayer-funded socialist paradise. General Motors U.S. Sales Increase 3% in November

GM sales year-to-date (2.34 million) are up 3.5% in an industry that recovered at almost four times that rate. Among major automakers GM’s sales gains are the weakest by far, particularly when compared to the resurgent Japanese Three, with Toyota (1.9 m) at +29%, Honda (1.3 m) at +24% and Nissan (1 m) +11%, now that natural-disaster induced production disruptions are over. To be fair, the tepid GM sales are the sum of a complex three-dimensional game, which attempts to balance badly needed revenue and profits, against capacity, competitive actions and momentum, along with ongoing brand rebuilding. Global Light Vehicle Sales Flat in October at 80.6 Million SAAR

Global sales of light vehicles were flat in October as declines in the EU offset modest gains elsewhere. Nonetheless, on a seasonally adjusted annual basis or SAAR, 2012 is tracking at a rate of 80.6 million units a year, with 68 million vehicles sold year-to-date. This means that the trend line of ever increasing global sales is now restored to a pre-2008 slope, before the global collapse of the financial and real estate markets created a Grand Canyon-sized dip from more than 70 million units in 2007 to a trough of ~55 million in 2008 and 2009. U.S. Auto Sales to Continue Upward in Latest November Forecast

November U.S. auto sales for new retail vehicles are now predicted at 931,900 cars and light trucks, a 14% bump up year-over-year, which would mean a seasonally adjusted annualized rate or SAAR of 12.9 million units. If accurate, November would see the highest retail rate for the auto industry since January 2008, before the corrupt practices of Wall Street collapsed the global economy and caused the Great Recession alter that year. Retail transactions are said to be the most accurate measurement of true underlying consumer demand for new vehicles. Continue reading
