Hyundai Motor America is recalling 2025 IONIQ 5 EV vehicles. The rear floor wiring harness may contain an open circuit, which can result in the rear side airbag not deploying as intended, according to the mandatory safety recall filing made public by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration today. The driving will see the Illumination of the airbag warning lamp. A rear side airbag non-deployment may increase the risk of injury to occupants during crashes warranting commanded deployment of the SRS.
“The rear floor wiring harness in the subject vehicles may have been produced with insufficient crimping at the rear side airbag connector terminal(s), increasing the risk of an open circuit. An open circuit could impede the deployment signal in the affected connector,” Hyundai told NHTSA.
Chronology
- On 14 January 2025, NASO received a Speak Up for Safety (“SUFS”) report submitted by HMGMA regarding a model year 2025 IONIQ 5 vehicle with an illuminated air bag warning light found during a routine inspection of final assembled vehicles. NASO opened an investigation and began reviewing production and field data.
- From16 January through 21, NASO continued to receive updates regarding HMGMA’s investigation into root cause, including manufacturing records and potential countermeasure(s) obtained from the supplier. According to the supplier, insufficiently crimped rear floor wiring harnesses were produced due to non-conforming parts requiring rework being inserted back into normal production.
- Based on HMGMA’s information, NASO convened its North America Safety Decision Authority (“NASDA”) on 30 January 2025, for review of its findings and decided to conduct a safety recall of all affected model year 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 vehicles in the U.S. As of the date of this filing, Hyundai has not received reports of incidents involving sold vehicles and is not aware of any associated crashes, fires, injuries, or fatalities.
Dealers will inspect and replace the rear floor wiring harness, as necessary, free of charge as required by U.S. Safety regulations. Owner notification letters are not expected to be mailed until 7 April 2025. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai’s number for this recall is 274. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at nhtsa.gov about NHTSA recall 25V064 or 25V-064.
