Jaguar Land Rover North America is recalling 2019 I-Pace SUV vehicles, according to documents released this morning by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The high-voltage battery in the electric Jaguar may overheat, which is a potential fire hazard. These vehicles were built at the Graz Vehicle Assembly Plant in Poland from 6 June – 31 October 2018 and use a Polish-built battery from Chinese LG energy Systems. They were previously recalled under NHTSA 23V369 and will need to have the new safety defect remedy completed.

The fix for the safety defect is currently under development. Owners are advised to park and charge their vehicles outside and away from structures, and to only charge their vehicles to a maximum 75% state of charge until the recall repair is complete.

In the required NHTSA filing Jaguar said, “battery packs manufactured between 1 March 2018 and 31 May 2018 are exposed to multiple technical issues that have shown to contribute to an elevated risk of thermal overload. The packs from this period have a greater propensity for short circuits in the battery cells which generates heat build-up and will, where the battery state of charge (SOC) is greater than circa 85% trigger thermal overload. Vehicles already modified through safety recall H441 are less likely to experience thermal overload but to remove all doubt for this population, this safety recall is being undertaken.”

“A vehicle thermal overload condition such as fire or smoke can result in increased risk of occupant injury and/or injury to persons outside the vehicle, as well as property damage.

“Most vehicles remain under the manufacturers 8 year / 100,000 mile Battery Electric Vehicle (‘BEV’) Traction Battery Warranty, it is unlikely customers will have been charged for any repairs related to this matter,” said Jaguar.

Notifications to dealers was on 21 March, 2024. Distribution of owner notification letters will occur on or before 26 April 2024. Owners may contact Jaguar’s customer service at 1-800-452-4827. Jaguar’s number for this recall is H484. These vehicles were previously recalled under NHTSA 23V369 and will need to have the new safety defect remedy completed. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
