GM Soft Q1 Income of $2.1B as N.A., International Decline
The only core business bright spot is the sales of expensive pickup trucks, which GM claims will really jump-start earnings during the second half of the year, if – big if – markedly increased production from RAM and Ford, rising gas prices and a sluggish economy don’t alter the current celebratory mood. “GM is arrogant enough to think it can rob Canada of jobs without repercussions,” said Unifor National President Jerry Dias, who resisted the boycott at first. “GM is making a choice to increase manufacturing in Mexico while it abandons communities that have supported it for generations but make no mistake Canadian and American consumers also have a choice,” he concluded. FCA UAW Target for Contract Talks

GM Announces $5.4 Billion in U.S. Plant Investments
Since June 2009, GM has announced U.S. facility spending of ~$16.8 billion. About $11.4 billion of that has come since the 2011 UAW-GM National Agreement that is up for renewal, with the two-tier wage system a major potential point of contention. In total, GM said these investments have created 3,650 new jobs and secured the positions of approximately 20,700 others. Continue reading

Globalization Comes at last to Unions. UAW Growing in South?
Taking a play from multinational corporations who have used globalization and misleadingly named ‘Free-trade’ agreements to evade taxes and drive down pay rates in the U.S., trade unions are now using their global clout to organize non-union auto plants in the Southern U.S. The latest example comes from Mississippi where the UAW has been campaigning for four years to establish a company-recognized trade union into the Nissan plant in Canton and its 4,000 workers. Nissan reported more than $1 billion in profits during the Japanese Q1. Continue reading
