Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (NYSE: TM, 7203T) is recalling more than 500,000 model year 2025-2026 Camry Hybrid vehicles. The Visteon Corporation Mexican-built instrument cluster display may fail during vehicle startup.

“The subject vehicles are equipped with a 7-inch display combination meter, which controls certain vehicle functions and displays various information in the instrument panel. At vehicle startup, an error may occur in the startup sequence for this combination meter that can cause the combination meter to become blank,” Toyota said in the mandatory safety defect recall filing made public this morning by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

“In addition, the turn signal lamps, the hazard lamp function, and certain warning buzzers (including the key left in ignition and the driver/passenger seat belt reminders) do not function,” Toyota said.

Dealers will update the display software, free of charge as required by U.S. Federal safety regulations. Owner notification letters are not expected to be mailed until 21 September 2026. Owners may contact Toyota’s customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota’s numbers for this recall are 26TB16 and 26TA16.

Chronology

  • After beginning to receive reports in July 2024 alleging that the 7-inch combination meter for the subject vehicles would remain blank upon startup, parts were recovered from the field and sent to the supplier for investigation, but the issue could not be replicated.
  • From October 2025 Toyota and the supplier (Visteon Mexico) investigated additional reports and, suspecting a software initialization concern, prepared special equipment that could obtain more detailed data from vehicles experiencing the condition. This enabled the supplier to perform bench testing, inducing the suspected software initialization concern, in which it recreated a blank meter condition similar to the allegations from the field.
  • From April 2026, the supplier performed power cycle bench testing of the meter to attempt replication, but no occurrences happened.
  • In June 2026, Toyota and the supplier began testing on a complete vehicle, and in late July 2026 Toyota and the supplier replicated the phenomenon by inducing the software initialization concern, confirming the blank meter condition, determining that the concern could occur on actual vehicle. It also found that the condition could cause inoperative turn signal/hazard lamps and affect the operation of certain warning buzzers.
  • On July 31, 2026, Toyota determined that the subject vehicles identified in Section 3 contain combination meter software that may cause the conditions above and may not meet the requirements of FMVSS No. 101, paragraphs S5.1 through S5.5, FMVSS No. 108, paragraphs S6.1.5.1, S7.1.1.5, and S7.1.2.5, FMVSS No. 114, paragraph S5.1.3, and FMVSS No. 208, paragraph S7.3(a). As a result, Toyota decided to conduct a recall.
