September New Passenger Car Registrations Up in European Union, But Trend is Downward
During the first nine months of 2019, EU new car registrations were down 1.6% compared to the same period the year before. Despite demand recovering across the European Union in September, Germany (+2.5%) was the only major market to post positive results so far this year. Spain (‐7.4%) saw the strongest drop, followed by the United Kingdom (‐2.5%), Italy (‐1.6%) and France (‐1.3%). Continue reading

EU September Passenger Car Sales Plummet
ACEA claims this should not come as a surprise, as the introduction of the new WLTP test at the beginning of last month caused an exceptional surge in registrations in August (+31.2%). EU Commercial Vehicle Sales Jump 15% in December
Increases occurred in all commercial vehicle segments. Italy (+23.2%), Spain (+23.0%), the UK (+20.3%) ended the year posting double digit percentage gains in December, followed by France (+9.4%) and Germany (+8.7%). Continue reading

Automakers Protest European Laws Targeting Diesel Use
The automakers reason, not without some basis in fact – that the most effective way to improve air quality is getting older cars and trucks off the road. New vehicles less than one year old are roughly 5% of the road population in the EU. As more of the older diesels are replaced, it looks like fewer of them will be diesels, no matter how clean the newest ones are. Continue reading

EU February Car Sales Increase. Signs of Life?
EU February car sales increased for the sixth consecutive month, with a rise of 8% in registrations. However, in absolute figures, the 861,058 units registered marked the second lowest result to date for a month of February since ACEA, the automakers trade group, began keeping track in 2003 with the commencement of an enlarged EU. EU Sales Recover in December. Six Year Trend Still Down
The automaker trade group says that from January to December, the EU market recorded 11,850, 905 new cars. With a decrease of -1.7% in 2013, European new car registrations have been on the decline for six consecutive years. Continue reading

European Car Sales Down. Lowest Level Ever for Year
From January through August 2013, new car sales amounted to 7,841,596 units or 5.2% less than in the same period last year. This means that it was the lowest January to August level ever recorded since record keeping began in 1990, according to ACEA, the automakers trade association. Continue reading

German Chancellor German Chancellor Angela Merkel last week killed a draft European Union law aimed at reducing carbon dioxide. November EU Commercial Vehicle Sales Flat. YTD -20%
Year-to-date reflects the ongoing Covid catastrophe. Sales at 1.5 million units were down -20.3% 11 months into 2020. All EU27 markets – including the four major ones – have recorded double-digit declines so far in 2020, although less steep than in the preceding months: Spain (-28.4%), France (-18.4%), Germany (-16.3%) and Italy (-15.6%).
