In November 2023, the EU’ car market grew by 6.7%, according to data just released by ACEA.* This was the sixteenth consecutive month of expansion. There were substantial double-digit gains in some markets, including two of the largest: Italy (+16.2%) and France (+14%).

Overall new car registrations were +6.7% in November; with a battery electric market share at 16.3%. Eleven months into 2023, new car registrations increased by 15.7%, reaching nearly ten million units. With the exception of Hungary, all EU markets grew during this eleven-month period. EU – EVs Outsell Diesel Cars for First Time
Perhaps more significant though is that battery electric vehicles took a 15.1% market share, outselling tax-favored diesel vehicles. Hybrid-electric cars remained the second-most popular choice among new car buyers, representing 24.3% of the market. Gasoline fueled cars retained the largest share, accounting for 36.3%. EU Commercial Vehicle Registrations -8.5% in October
In a demonstration of the murky answer to the question “is the ongoing European-recession glass half-empty or half-full?”, ACEA* said today that the EU market for new commercial vehicles continued to scuffle, declining for the sixteenth month in a row at -8.5% vehicles.
However, year-to-date registrations of new commercial vehicles across the European Union contracted by 16.8% to 1.3 million units. So things are improving somewhat since the rate of decline is decreasing. Moreover, the truck and bus segments performed better than in October 2021. Continue reading

Statistical Quirks Show September EU Car Sales up 10%
This is really a mathematical quirk since the “increase” came from a low base of comparison from September 2021, when the semiconductor shortage hindered vehicle production. This is an economic calamity because 12.7 million Europeans work in the auto industry, directly or indirectly, comprising 6.6% of all EU jobs. Moreover, 11.5% of EU manufacturing jobs, ~3.5 million, are in the automotive sector. Motor vehicles are responsible for €398.4 billion of tax revenue for governments within key European markets. EU Passenger Car Sales Drop 21% in April
With the exception of the pandemic year in 2020, this was the weakest April result in terms of volumes sold since records began. Put another way, Russian roulette is a bad game. West European Car Sales Decline in April to 8.8 Million
“Supply chain bottlenecks still the key reason for the depressed level of registration statistics. The war in Ukraine, as well as lock-downs in China, will likely exacerbate supply issues, meaning vehicle sales will continue to suffer from a lack of adequate supply,” LMC said today. EU Registrations: Q1 -12.3%, March -20.5%
The ongoing supply chain interruptions, further exacerbated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, negatively affected car production. This compares to Passenger car registrations: -6.4% first two months of 2022; -6.7% in February, which means the trend line is increasingly negative. Continue reading
