First Look – Canoo EV Pickup Truck
The larger story, perhaps, is the company, not the vehicle. Canoo is a Los Angeles-based company that has, arguably, pioneering technologies. Its business model drops traditional ownership and is a glimpse at the future of automobility that other companies are also pursuing. Canoo will not have a physical sales network. The company will offer its product directly to customers via subscription, not ownership. Continue reading
Daimler Truck, Volvo Group Create “cellcentric” Fuel-Cell JV
The joint venture will develop, produce and commercialize fuel-cell systems for use in heavy-duty trucks as the primary focus, as well as other applications. A key goal of Daimler Truck AG and the Volvo Group is to start with customer tests of trucks with fuel-cells in about three years and to commence series production during the second half of this decade. Continue reading
Groupe Renault and Faurecia to Work on Hydrogen Storage
Hydrogen, of course, is central to an ongoing energy transition toward zero-emissions mobility. Fuel cell electric vehicle technology will be significant in the powertrain and vehicle mix by 2030 promoted or demanded by government regulations, taxpayer subsidies and the growing realization that Global Warming is a significant health and economic threat. Continue reading
Subsidized Mercedes-Benz Compact EQA EV Available to Order
As confusing as this all sounds, Mercedes actually has reduced the complexity of its EQA models. Instead of having to decide between more than 100 individual options, customers have a choice of three pre-configured packages. Continue reading
Electrify America Adds Solar EV Charging in Rural California
Electrify America’s EV charging infrastructure plans in California include a commitment to increasing access to EV charging infrastructure in rural areas of the state, to both facilitate regional travel and drive adoption of EVs in rural communities. With complimentary charging, the new solar units help remove two barriers to EV adoption in these locations – access to public charging and affordability. The network said it ensured that more than half of these chargers were located in disadvantaged and low-income communities, demonstrating the company’s ongoing commitment to serve these populations. Continue reading
Volkswagen Group Starts Small Scale EV Battery Recycling
Salzgitter only recycles batteries that can no longer be used for other purposes. Before the battery is recycled, an analysis determines whether the battery is still powerful enough to be given a second life in mobile energy storage systems such as the flexible rapid charging station or the mobile charging robot. Larger volumes of battery returns are not expected until the late 2020s at the earliest. Continue reading
Environmental About Face – General Motors Ditching Internal Combustion Engines by 2035. Carbon Neutral by 2040?
More than half of GM’s capital spending and product development team will be devoted to electric and electric-autonomous vehicle programs. And in the coming years, GM plans to offer an EV for every customer, from crossovers and SUVs to trucks and sedans. This neatly coincides with President Biden’s executive orders dealing with climate change and converting federal fleets to EVs. The success of the initiative will depend on the voters, err buyers, who will ultimately decide. Continue reading
GM to Sell Navistar Hydrotec Fuel Cell Power Cubes for EVs
The GM move is the latest in what is shaping up to be a headlong rush by commercial truck makers to drop dirty diesel and gasoline fueled vehicles in favor of fuel cell powered truck and heavy equipment. Proposed regulations – globally – are providing the incentive to change product lines to more sustainable ones. It’s the price of survival. The Japanese – thus far – appear to be leading the way. Continue reading
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, ENGIE EPS JV to Explore e-Mobility
The problem is that China, the world’s largest auto market, has locked in supplies of the materials needed to make advanced batteries, and through regulatory policy and other incentives is leading the way on the conversion to electric vehicles. The intellectual property battles will eventually commence AutoInformed predicts. Continue reading
Honda’s New Mobility Business – Cruise to Send First Self-Driving Vehicles to Japan for Testing
This, admittedly small but symbolic milestones, is a direct result of the development and commercial agreements signed in October 2018. Continue reading
GM, Cruise, Microsoft to Commercialize Self-Driving Vehicles
Microsoft will join General Motors, Honda and institutional investors in a combined new equity investment of more than $2 billion in Cruise, bringing the post-money valuation of Cruise to $30 billion. Founded and headquartered in San Francisco, Cruise’s stated goal is to build the world’s most advanced self-driving, all-electric, shared vehicles. GM will launch 30 new electric vehicles globally by 2025. Continue reading
CARB Settles AltAir Paramount Abuses of Low Carbon Fuel
The LCFS requires quarterly and annual reports to be submitted completely and accurately. CARB alleged that AltAir for the 2017 Reporting Period, and sold, supplied, offered for sale, and transported fuel into the State of California, but failed to report and submitted a report containing inaccuracies, misreported, or entered false quarterly and annual report information, which led to a failure to eliminate annual deficits. These are violations of the LCFS regulation. Continue reading
FAA Grants Santa Claus Special Flight and Launch Permissions
Santa knows this Christmas is different from other years and agrees with the FAA decision to give priority to flights carrying COVID-19 vaccines and other cargo critical to the nation’s response to the ongoing public health emergency aided by a naughty and decidedly not nice Republa-Grinch group. Follow Santa’s progress as he travels across the U.S. by visiting the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) website, where NORAD tracks Santa’s Christmas Eve voyage. Continue reading

California Law – 100% Clean Electricity by 2045. Here’s the Plan
The 178-page report claims that the goals of SB 100 can be achieved in different ways but reaching them will require significant investments in new and existing technologies and an increased, sustained build-out of clean energy projects to bring new resources on-line. The report modeled various scenarios to examine sample paths to carbon-free energy. It will be followed with additional analyses of energy reliability and evolving conditions. California’s electricity mix is already more than 60% carbon free. About 36% of that comes from renewable sources, predominantly wind and solar. Continue reading →
