Test Drive – 2016 Honda HR-V, a Pint Sized CR-V
The new Honda HR-V is – technically – a subcompact, a notch down in size from the compact-sized CR-V (which Honda sells a bunch of). However, the difference between the two is mostly footprint-wise. The newest littlest Honda crossover is about a foot shorter overall than the CR-V. Inside, though, the subcompact HR-V actually has more backseat legroom than its, err, bigger brother. Almost ide Continue reading

Test Drives – Scion iA and iM
Scion, the youth brand of Toyota, will start selling a new iA sedan and an iM 4-door hatchback this September at 1000 dealers. In a long overdue response to Korean marketing techniques – over-equip, then underprice – the Scion iA and iM are loaded with technology with few options. Continue reading

Test Drive – 2016 Hyundai Tucson Gen Three
Caveat here: The whole industry is moving at a rapid pace toward small displacement force-fed engines, but the real world fuel economy improvements – if any – are heavily dependent on where you drive and how smooth your driving technique is. In stop and go conditions – whether induced by traffic or by drivers that are first to every red light with late braking will not see any gains in our experience. For these people, the new Tucson’s fuel tank has been increased by 1.1 gallons. Continue reading

Driving the 2015 Dodge Charger Hellcat
A 707 horsepower car that can be driven around like any other car. Consider that any ’60s or ’70s-era muscle car that could run a sub-12-second quarter-mile was not street-drivable. Continue reading

2016 Chevrolet Cruze Debuts in Detroit
The new 2016 Chevrolet Cruze is a design hybrid too, but it is a much better execution for U.S. customers. In the United States, Cruze sales were 273,060 in 2014 – a 10% increase compared to 2013. It is also the segment’s second-best seller to customers under 25 years old in the U.S., and it has doubled share here from the 2009-2010 period when the old Cobalt was being replaced by the current generation Cruz. No reason why Cruze sales will not keep growing, unless GM gets greedy on the introductory pricing. Continue reading

2016 Chevy Cruze Debuts end of June, on Sale this Winter
The current Cruze is a design hybrid since its engineering was done at Opel in Germany and Daewoo in Korea. North American versions went into production at Lordstown, Ohio during the summer of 2010. Unlike the last time around where Cruz after being on sale for years in 60 countries debuted in the U.S. last because of complications and delays caused by the GM bankruptcy. Now, Cruze will debut first here. Continue reading

Gen 9 Malibu Debuts in New York
The main selling point aside from sleek styling appears to fuel economy with the hybrid version at a GM-estimated 48 mpg city, 45 mpg highway, 47 mpg combined; now leading the segment. The Malibu’s standard 1.5-liter turbo powertrain is projected at 37 mpg highway. (We will see for how long these numbers impress since the technologies used are well-know and available to all makers.) Continue reading
Toyota and Lexus to Introduce Low Cost Automatic Braking
From a significance point of view the new Lexus RX – the crossover SUV built from the Camry in the last century that caught the Detroit Three and the Germans napping and ultimately propelled Lexus into the number one spot of U.S. luxury car sales is the one to watch. Early previews reveal a radically style fastback that aside from the now expected and highly controversial exaggerated snout grille, seems to trade off utility for flash. Continue reading
