Luxury brand Porsche and populist Chevrolet lead initial quality reports for 2013 models. As a manufacturer, General Motors leads other automakers by far. These claims come from the latest J.D. 2013 Global Light Vehicle Sales Tracking at 83 million
Global light vehicle sales held steady in May with a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of sales of 82.8 million units a year, according to the latest data from LMC Automotive. The consultancy predicts that full-year 2013 sales will be 83.4 million units. Continue reading

GM Declares Dividend on Series B Preferred Stock
The convertible preferred stock was offered at $50 per share when GM emerged from bankruptcy. The shares automatically convert to a variable amount of GM common stock on 1 December 2013. If GM common is trading at $33 for a period preceding that, preferred shareholders will at least break even on the $50 per share price paid. General Motors, Ford Post Record May China Sales
General Motors and its joint ventures sold a May record of 252,942 vehicles in China, sales increasing 9.4% from the same month last year. Crosstown rival and slow starter in China, Ford Motor Company also posted a record from a year earlier to 70,540 passenger cars. Continue reading

Ford Motor May U.S. Sales Up 14%
Ford Motor Company’s May U.S. sales rose 14% compared with one year ago. It was the best May sales since 2006 for the Number Two U.S. automaker. The U.S.’s best-selling pickup by far, F-Series, had its strongest May sales since 2005 at 71,604, which meant a 31% increase versus last year and its 22nd straight monthly sales increase. Chrysler Group May 2013 U.S. Sales Up 11%
Chrysler Group today reported U.S. sales of 166,596 units, an 11% increase compared with sales in May 2012. It was the Fiat controlled group’s best May sales since 2007. Jeep, Dodge, Ram Truck and Fiat brands each posted year-over-year sales gains in May compared with a year ago. Year-to-date, Group sales are up 9% at more than 752,000 vehicles. Continue reading

April EU Commercial Vehicle Sales Up Slightly. YTD off -7.6%
In a classic half empty or half-full interpretive dilemma, commercial vehicle sales in the EU increased 3.6% for the first time since December 2011. The uptick came mostly from demand for new vans (+5.8%). However, his year, the EU counted on average two more working days compared to the same month in 2012 because of how the Easter holiday fell. May U.S. New Vehicle Sales Projected at 12.5 m SAAR
New vehicle sales in May are projected to be about 1 million retail units higher than one year ago, resulting in a seasonally adjusted annualized rate or SAAR of 12.5 million. This is the highest annual rate since January of 2013, and May, if the forecast is accurate, will be the third consecutive month with retail sales in excess of 1 million. Relatively affluent new vehicle buyers are taking advantage of cheap interest rates as the Federal Reserve continues to print money in a desperate attempt to revive a sluggish economy where 16 million people remain unemployed or under-employed because of the ongoing effects of the Great Recession.
