Today, the DNC sued Donald Trump and his administration over their illegal use of taxpayer dollars to fund political propaganda ads in a desperate attempt to boost Republicans’ plummeting approval ratings ahead of the midterms.*

“Donald Trump is misusing millions of taxpayer dollars to fund pure propaganda ads in a last-ditch attempt to save Republicans in November — so we’re suing him. As gas and grocery costs rise and his approval numbers continue to crater, this president has stooped to taking money from a fund intended for memorials for Americans killed in the line of duty to promote his failed policies. Americans deserve better than to have their hard-earned tax dollars used for Trump’s illegal schemes,” said DNC Chair Ken Martin.

“The DNC’s lawsuit accuses President Trump of personally directing this illegal, blatant violation of the statutory ban on the use of taxpayer dollars for political propaganda, and directing U.S. Customs and Border Protection to carry out this partisan advertising campaign. The illegal use of government funds for campaign-style ads is a clear violation of the Congressional ban on the use of appropriated funds for ‘publicity or propaganda purposes,’ and allows Republican campaigns and committees to spend on other political activities,” the DNC said in a release.

The Charges as Filed

“The DNC’s lawsuit accuses President Trump of personally directing this illegal, blatant violation of the statutory ban on the use of taxpayer dollars for political propaganda, and directing U.S. Customs and Border Protection to carry out this partisan advertising campaign. The illegal use of government funds for campaign-style ads is a clear violation of the Congressional ban on the use of appropriated funds for ‘publicity or propaganda purposes,’ and allows Republican campaigns and committees to spend on other political activities.

“Trump is illegally using funds that were transferred to an account for commemorative events — including memorials for Americans killed in the line of duty and commendation ceremonies — to attempt to boost his dismal approval numbers. Even Republicans are admitting that the more Trump centers himself in the midterms, the worse Republican polling gets,” the DNC said.
