Full-Size Pickup Truck Trade-In Prices Up 7%
Auction prices for full-size pickup trucks are up 7% for the first four months of 2013, according to the May edition of the NADA Used Car Guide. Contributing to the higher values for used, full-size pickups is supply and demand. The supply of full-size pickups up to 8-years-old declined by 17% from 2007 to 2012, and will fall by an additional 8% on an annual basis in 2013, NADA predicts. As a result, full-size pickup trucks have increased in price 28% from 2007 to 2012, Continue reading

NADA Jumps on 2013 Auto Sales Forecast Bandwagon – 15.4 Million
The auto sales momentum of new cars and light trucks established last year is likely to continue in 2013, predicts Paul Taylor of the National Automobile Dealers Association. NADA, at 15.4 million, joins Polk at 15.3 million and LMC at 15 million units for total light-vehicle sales and 12.2 million for retail sales. In 2012 14.4 million light cars, SUVs and trucks in total were sold in the U.S. as the auto market continued its slow recovery. Continue reading

NADA Chairman Says Automakers Use Unfair Business Practices
The new chairman of the National Automobile Dealers Association, Bill Underriner, said today that automakers need to stop intruding into dealerships. After noting the Tigers are back in the World Series at the Automotive Press Association in Detroit, he said there’s “good energy here. The auto industry is doing its part to lead the economic recovery. But we still have a long way to go – not just here but all around the country. Auto sales are up, but financial pressures are too…especially on dealerships.” Continue reading

Steep Gas Prices Have Little Effect on Used Auto Sales
Steeply rising gasoline prices have had little effect on the used car market since most people are sticking with the current vehicle, according to the National Automobile Dealers Association. This is the opposite of what happened when gas prices rose as recently as last year. Continue reading

Incentives, Declining Used Car Prices Could Boost U.S. Auto Sales
New-vehicle incentives and rebates, as well as declining prices on used vehicles are a couple of factors pointing to steady auto sales as the summer months come to a close, according to the National Automobile Dealers Association. Continue reading

Judge Rules Against Dealers on Disclosure of Car Loan Terms
A federal judge in Washington has ruled that automobile dealers who engage in so-called three-party financing transactions must disclose information to consumers who take out car loans if they are offered less favorable terms, such as a higher interest rate, than the most favorable terms available to the majority of consumers. Continue reading

Right to Repair Bill Passes Massachusetts Senate
A version of the bill, omitting dealerships, is currently before the Massachusetts house, with unknown prospects. However, more than 100,000 citizens signed a Right to Repair ballot initiative earlier this year. If the legislature does not pass a final bill, the state’s consumers will get their own chance to vote—on the November ballot. Recent polls have shown support level for Right to Repair as high as 87%. Continue reading
Will Rising Gasoline Prices Hurt New or Used Car Sales?
What this means for the recovering U.S. vehicle market is unclear. New vehicle sales have been slowly rising but are still far below pre-Great Recession rates. What is clear is that this is bad news for drivers and energy consumers, is that global liquid fuels consumption is at historically high levels. Continue reading

Ex President George Bush Endorses Federal Auto Bailouts
Former President George W. Bush received large ovations as he addressed the National Automobile Dealers Association Convention yesterday in Las Vegas. Bush’s message on the controversial government bailouts of the U.S. auto industry was simple “I’d do it again,” he told standing-room-only crowd of mostly affluent auto dealers. Continue reading
Hyundai, Subaru and Lexus Lead in NADA Satisfaction Survey
The survey, conducted twice a year by the National Automobile Dealers Association, rates dealer sentiment in three areas: franchise value, automaker policy decisions that affect the dealership and the automaker’s field staff who visit dealerships. Continue reading
Right to Repair on Massachusetts Ballot. National Bill Stalled
A similar national measure, the Motor Vehicle Owners’ Right to Repair Act (H.R. 1449), died from inaction in the 2011 U.S. Congress. Various forms of Right to Repair bills have been tied up in successive Congresses since 2002. It is not surprising that the National Association of Automobile Dealers opposes the legislation. NADA says that automakers provide emissions service and some other data available to any technician who needs it already. Continue reading

NADA Chairman Announces New Economic Study about Automakers Forcing New Car Dealership Improvements
“Each year dealers collectively invest billions of dollars in facility upgrades, much of it mandated by the auto manufacturers,” said Stephen W. Wade, chairman of the National Automobile Dealers Association while speaking to the Automotive Press Association in Detroit. In normal times this would be a classic dealer versus automaker squabble. However, with consumers strapped, long term unemployment at record Great Depression highs and the economic recovery tenuous at best – if it is occurring at all – the affordability of new vehicles is at stake.
European Brands Gain Momentum in U.S. Consumer Interest
Overall interest for domestic brands actually decreased by 4.4% while sales increased 1.9% during the second quarter of 2011 – which the NADA analysts think may be an indication that sales for the domestic brands may see a decrease in the near future. Consumer interest in Japanese brands increased by 1.8% in Q2, while sales numbers for the brands dropped 3.5% during the second quarter. Continue reading

AAA Asks Congress Yet Again to Pass “Right to Repair Act”
Dealerships used to thrive on automaker-paid warranty repairs, paid for by the factory at reduced labor rates. In order to compensate technicians for this factory dictated lower rate, dealers charged higher rates for non-warranty parts and repairs. In effect, car owners were subsidizing the cost of poor quality at automakers if they went to a factory store. Continue reading
