NYAS: Regal Returns as – What Else? – a Crossover
The former Detroit Big Three can’t give away a car, but are basking in the strong sales sunshine of pickup trucks (no Buick thus far?), SUVs and crossovers. The much Diminished Big Three – held 43.8% of the U.S. March vehicle market, down from 46% last month – despite an ongoing boom in light truck and crossover sales, slipping from 44.5% last March. Toyota and Lexus to Introduce Low Cost Automatic Braking
From a significance point of view the new Lexus RX – the crossover SUV built from the Camry in the last century that caught the Detroit Three and the Germans napping and ultimately propelled Lexus into the number one spot of U.S. luxury car sales is the one to watch. Early previews reveal a radically style fastback that aside from the now expected and highly controversial exaggerated snout grille, seems to trade off utility for flash. Continue reading

BMW X4 Crossover Debuts at New York Auto Show
Like the X6 before it, the BMW claims the X4 combines performance and capability with “the style and elegance of traditional coupe.” In reality – once you get away from such marketing babble – it is a 4-door hatchback. There no doubt about the premium price, though. In the U.S., the X4 will be offered with a choice of two turbocharged engines. The xDrive28i has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price of $45,625, including destination and handling. It comes with a 240 horsepower, 2-liter four-cylinder engine that produces peak torque of 260 lb.-ft. (350 Nm) and a claimed zero-to-60 mph time of six seconds flat. Continue reading
First Look – 2014 Cadillac CTS Mid-Size Sedan
In GM’s latest attempt to make Cadillac a global brand, it is increasing the size of the CTS while toning down its distinctive styling that made it successful in the U.S. but is thought too radical for offshore customers of German and Japanese luxury cars. Continue reading

Caught Testing – the Revised 2014 Cadillac CTS?
Look for Cadillac to unveil this car at the New York Auto Show next month. I caught these camouflaged versions while they were out on a recent prototype test run in the frozen north. The new 2014 CTS appears to be close to a full-size sedan, but still keeping Cadillac’s distinctive angular design themes. Continue reading

Kia Rio Hatchback Will Debut at New York Auto Show
Thus far with sales of about 2,000 units a month in the U.S., the Kia Rio has been an insignificant factor in the hard fought sub-compact sales wars led by Honda Fit, Nissan Versa and Toyota Yaris. Continue reading
