Milestones – Toyota Motor Sells 4 Million Hybrid Vehicles
Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) in Japan announced today that its global hybrid vehicle sales totaled four million vehicles through April 2012. of that 1.5 million Toyota hybrids have been sold in the United States where it dominates the advanced technology vehicle market by outselling all other hybrid and electric vehicles combined. Toyota in the U.S. now holds 65% of the hybrid market, with the Prius a line accounting for 1.2 million vehicles year-to-date. Continue reading

Ford C-Max Hybrid Priced $1,000 Less than Prius V
Ford Motor Company said today that the 2013 Ford C-Max compact hybrid utility vehicle will be available this fall with a base price of $25,995 – more than $1,000 lower than the Toyota Prius v’s base price. Whether this makes any sales difference in the marketplace against the formidable Prius lineup remains to be seen. Continue reading

Honda Uni-Cub Electric Unicycle Enters Testing in June
Honda Motor Company today unveiled its new Uni-Cub personal mobility device, a computer-controlled electric unicycle that looks to be a production ready outgrowth of the U3-X first shown in 2009. The compact EV with a saddle provides the same freedom of movement in all directions that a person has while walking. Since it doesn’t replace body parts, Uni-Cub is not technically a prosthetic device, but will have widespread applications in manufacturing or warehousing and any other indoor occupation that requires walking. Smart Escooter Coming in 2014
Daimler has confirmed that the Smart E-Scooter will go on sale in 2014 at an unspecified price. First introduced as a concept from its Chinese studios at the Paris Motor Show in 2010, the fully electric Escooter is part of a range of electric vehicles including the Smart Fourtwo and Smart Ebike that are targeted for the European Union, which wants to ban all internal combustion engines from inner cities. Windsor, Canada to Buy Chinese BYD Electric Buses

Ready For a 4-Point Seat Belt? Renault Thinks So
Geeks can debate whether this is a 4-point seat belt or 5-point solution. Simply put, there are two seat belt systems in play. This latest seat belt restraint design requires a first step – slipping an arm under a fixed 2-pointseat belt, then grabbing a seat belt the opposite side, the traditional “buckle up” action is needed from the driver or the tandem passenger of the two-seat car. Since Twizy is really an electric motorcycle on four wheels, whether this adds or detracts from the saleability of thus far market challenged EVs remains to be seen. Continue reading

DOE Gives EV Supplier UQM More Time on ARRAS Grant
The politically contentious American Recovery and Reinvestment Act contained billions upon billions in taxpayer funding to businesses though a number of Recovery Act and related programs, including loans, loan guarantees, grants, contracts and tax incentives, in partnership with the Department of Treasury. Current production Toyota hybrids use nickel metal hydride batteries, an older but thoroughly proven technology. Toyota has been reluctant to use the newer, more expensive lithium ion technology, much loved by environmentalist, but shunned thus far by mainstream car buyers. A123 Recalls Lithium Ion Batteries Shipped to Fisker, Others
The $55 million recall comes after the well-publicized failure during testing of a Fisker Karma that was owned by Consumer Reports. A123, an investor in Fisker, lost almost $260 million in 2011. A123 received a $249.1 million grant from the Department of Energy to reopen plants in Livonia and Romulus, Mich., as well as money and tax credits from Michigan worth more than $100 million.
