EV Tech-aches 2023 – More Problems than ICE Vehicles
“Innovation through a strong advanced tech strategy is crucial for all vehicle manufacturers, especially those working to build their reputation in the electric vehicle space,” said Kathleen Rizk, senior director of user experience benchmarking and technology at J.D. Power. “The perception in the industry is that most BEVs should offer many advanced technologies to compete with high-tech entrants like Tesla. Success will be dependent on those manufacturers that can execute flawlessly, while ensuring the user experience is the same for those who are tech savvy and those who are not.” Continue reading
US August 2023 New Vehicle Sales Forecast up 15%
Bidenomics is clearly working in AutoInformed’s point of view. The latest data show a continuing trend that started after President Biden was elected and began a recovery from the economic reverses and job losses from the Trump Administration. Trump was the first president since Herbert Hoover who left office having presided over an the Great Depression economic disaster and with far fewer jobs than existed at the outset. Continue reading
EPA Reviewing Ozone National Ambient Air Quality Standards
Exposure to ground-level ozone can cause respiratory issues, aggravate asthma and other lung diseases, and may lead to missed days of work or school, emergency room visits, and premature deaths. These costly public health impacts can be especially harmful to children and older adults, disproportionately affecting people of color, families with low-incomes, and other vulnerable populations. Republicans Increasing Support of IRA Climate Perks?
Surprising then to AutoInformed is the latest research from Data for Progress (DPA) that shows strong IRA support across partisan lines. Maybe the beating the Republicans (aka party of no hope) took in the midterms is beginning to have some corrective affect? Likely not at the upper levels of the party, however their Red Wave is waving bye, bye to them here. The people appear to get it. Maybe they (We The People) should dissolve the Republican leadership and elect a new one? Continue reading

Public Charging Issues Could Hurt EV Growth
“Though purported to be the wave of the future, satisfaction with DC (direct current) fast chargers has declined even further, dropping 20 points to 654 on a 1000-point scale. More troubling is that satisfaction in both charging station segments has declined in nearly every attribute measured in the study. Since consumer skepticism regarding public charging availability is the primary reason vehicle shoppers reject EVs, this performance could prove to be a further hindrance to EV acceptance,” Power said. Big Three UAW Strike Could Top $5B in Losses
“When the UAW went on strike against GM in 2019, Michigan experienced a single quarter recession,” said Patrick Anderson, AEG’s principal and CEO. That strike, which involved 48,000 workers at more than 50 plants, lasted six weeks. In 2023, there appears that at the moment there is the potential that a strike could involve more manufacturers, workers and plants, which makes theoretical comparisons difficult until there are more data points. “If that (all makers are struck) happens, even a short strike would impact economies throughout Michigan and across the nation,” said Anderson.* Continue reading
Polaris, Bobcat, Gravely Vehicles Recalled for Fire Risk
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled vehicles and contact Polaris or an authorized Polaris (Polaris vehicles only), Gravely (Gravely vehicles only), or Bobcat (Bobcat vehicles only) dealer to schedule a free inspection and repair. The dealer will replace the fuel pump or fuel tank, depending on the vehicle type, free of charge. Polaris, Gravely, and Bobcat have notified consumers to stop riding the vehicles and are notifying all dealers and registered owners about this recall. Continue reading
AC Cars Wins Right to AC Cobra Name
AC Cars, arguably Britain’s oldest active vehicle manufacturer, and Acedes Holdings, have prevailed in a legal challenge from Clive Sutton Limited about the ownership of the AC Cobra name in a London High Court. As a result, AC Cars retains the UK trademark of the AC Cobra name for automobiles, cars and sports cars. Continue reading
Toyota Posts Strong FY 2024 Q1 Results – $9.2 Billion Net
Sales volume increased in all regions due to productivity improvements inside TMC and with its suppliers. Consolidated vehicle sales Q1 was 2,326,000 units, at 115.5% of consolidated vehicle sales for the same period of the previous fiscal year. Toyota and Lexus vehicle sales was at 2,538,000 thousand units, at 108.4% of such sales for the same period of the previous fiscal year. This coincided with the better supply of semiconductors, which is still delaying delivery, particularly on new models. Notably, electrified vehicles were 34% of total sales. Continue reading
Ford Motor Recalls 2023 Super Duty Pickups
Ford said, “If the driver and front passenger door module experiences a low power condition and resets while the window is moving, the anti-pinch function may not detect an obstacle near the top edge and may not automatically reverse direction.” Continue reading
US July Vehicle Sales Forecast Up Significantly Again
Total new-vehicle sales for July 2023, including retail and non-retail transactions, are projected to reach 1,320,982 units, a 21.5% increase from July 2022, according to a joint forecast released today from J.D. Power and GlobalData.* Total sales of new vehicles this month are expected to reach 1,320,982 units, a 21.5% increase compared with July 2022 when adjusted for selling days.
Bidenomics is clearly working in AutoInformed’s point of view. (July 2023 has 25 selling days, one less than July 2022.) Comparing the same sales volume without adjusting for the number of selling days translates to an increase of 16.8% year-over-year. The seasonally adjusted annualized rate (SAAR) for total new-vehicle sales is expected to be 16 million units, up 2.6 million units from July 2022. Continue reading
SEC Issues Rules on Cybersecurity Risks
“Whether a company loses a factory in a fire — or millions of files in a cybersecurity incident — it may be material to investors,” said SEC Chair Gary Gensler. “Currently, many public companies provide cybersecurity disclosure to investors. I think companies and investors alike, however, would benefit if this disclosure were made in a more consistent, comparable, and decision-useful way. Through helping to ensure that companies disclose material cybersecurity information, today’s rules will benefit investors, companies, and the markets connecting them.” Continue reading
Renault and Nissan Settle Definitive Agreements
The upside for all who remain is survival in a difficult environment, in AutoInformed’s view. At the very least it locks in some badly needed economies of scale. It follows a general realignment ongoing at other global automakers. As with all such strategic agreements, announcing them is one thing. However, building a culture of shared trust across vast, diverse enterprises is quite another matter as the sorry Carlos Ghosn saga illustrated. Continue reading

Generative Artificial Intelligence – An Automaker Challenge
Absent in the following is what needs to be an extensive discussion of the public policy, employment, human challenges, and the effect on what traditionally are high paying jobs in the global auto industry. In AutoInformed’s view GlobalData can and likely will play a role in this. Continue reading →
