Chrysler, Ford, GM Post Double Digit August Sales Gains
Chrysler, Ford and GM all recorded double digit gains in U.S. August sales as the market went back to the pre-Great Recession levels of 2007. Robust pickup truck sales, a relatively trouble free changeover to the production of 2014 models, cheap credit and strong retail demand, all were factors in an overall industry that is now running at more than 16 million units annually. Global Sales of Toyota Motor Hybrid Vehicles Pass 5 Million
“We had to develop a hybrid system from scratch, making our task extremely difficult,” said TMC Vice Chairman Takeshi Uchiyamada, who was responsible for development of the first-generation Prius, the world’s first mass-produced hybrid passenger vehicle. Toyota had been excluded from participating in a multi-billion dollar U.S. Government program that subsidized the national labs and GM, Ford and Chrysler to develop 80 mpg cars. The so-called partnerships for a New Generation of Vehicles ended in failure with no cars other than a few prototypes produced. Continue reading

In 2012, a number 0 Nissan Delta Wing ran at the world’s most famous endurance race from the same unclassified Garage 56 spot. The real Japanese racers that were closely watched at Le Mans last year were a pair of Toyota hybrids, which ran in the fastest LMP1 class but lost to Audi. Continue reading

Toyota Settles Lawsuits for $1.1 Billion and Will Modify Millions of Vehicles with Electronically Controlled Gas Pedals to Stop Runaways
In an engineering lapse of monumental consequences that included several deaths, the computer programming on affected vehicles when confronted with both brake and accelerator inputs did not favor the brake input for its electronic engine controls. Such over-ride software is in widespread use at other automakers. Continue reading

Toyota, Honda Post Huge September Sales Gains, Nissan Stalls
Worrisome for competitors were increases in market share of 2.6% at Toyota, and 1.2% at Honda year-over-year, according to AutoData. Each percentage point in share is worth roughly $1 billion dollars in profits, according to an old industry rule of thumb. Left as road kill was Nissan whose share dropped more than 1% with sales of 92% units. Continue reading

Toyota Posts Strong Results in Q1 of the Japanese Fiscal Year
Toyota Motor Corporation today said that Q1 results for the Japanese fiscal year produced a profit of ¥90.3 billion yen ($3.71 billion). Toyota posted vehicle sales for the first quarter of 2.27 million cars and trucks, an increase of 1.04 million compared to the same period last fiscal year. The largest Japanese auto company also raised its full year sales forecast some 180,000 vehicles, to 9.76 million cars this year, a better than 20% increase from 7.95 million cars in 2011. If current trends hold, Toyota will become the world’s largest automaker with more than 10 million vehicles sold blowing by a slumping General Motors when the books are closed for the 2012 calendar year. Year to date Toyota is ahead of GM by more than 300,000 units. Continue reading

2013 Lexus ES 350 Starts at $36,995, Hybrid at $2,750 Premium
Both of the new ES models are based on – and use the same gas and hybrid powertrains – as the 2013 Toyota Avalon, which seems an unusually strong car from both technical and design viewpoints. Avalon will not only give Ford Taurus, Buick La Crosse and Chevrolet Impala strong competition next year in a full-size car segment once dominated by the Detroit Three, but it will challenge the new Lexus ES as well. The slowly recovering auto market presented mixed but arguably positive results for the Detroit Three. Continue reading
