2012 Toyota Prius C Hybrid Priced from $19,610 to $25,140
Though relatively high prices for a sub-compact car in the U.S., Toyota is betting that the hatchback with an EPA-estimated 53/46/50 city/highway/combined mpg along with Toyota’s unquestioned leadership in hybrid vehicles will be sufficient to make the car a success. Notably, the highway rating leads all cars except plug-in hybrids, which benefit in the ratings from credits when they run on electricity. Even the base Prius C model is loaded with equipment as an added incentive to spur sales. Continue reading
Chevrolet Adds “Ecologic” Window Sticker – Info Overload?
Whether consumers or General Motors will derive any clear benefits from the stickers remains to be seen. The Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation are also in the process of vastly expanded the amount and type of information on legally required window stickers, starting with the 2013 model year. Critics of the new stickers claim they are confusing since they contain so many different types of data. Continue reading
GM January 2012 U.S. Sales Down 6%. Revival Stalled?
General Motors (NYSE: GM) today reported total sales of 167,962 vehicles in the United States in January, down 6% compared with January 2011. All four GM brands posted sales declines year-over-year led by Cadillac which was down 29%. Buick was off 23% and GMC declined 10%. Overall the auto industry was up 11.4% for the month, so GM is not keeping pace with the slow recovery of the auto business, a potentially worrisome development if it becomes a trend for U.S. taxpayers who still hold more than 27% of the company. Mopar Debuts Third Factory Built Hot Rod off Chrysler 300
Still working its muscle car roots, the Mopar 300 has a 363 horsepower (hum the Charger was 370?) 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine and a now dated five-speed automatic transmission. A change from a 3.06:1 to a 3.91:1 final-drive means zero-to-60 mph times in the low 5-second range, according to Chrysler, same as the Charger. Continue reading

Toyota Leads Auto Brands in New Consumer Perception Study
What this really means to auto marketers is unclear as automakers are facing another tough year in the U.S. as the economy languishes and long-term unemployment remains at record highs not seen since the Great Depression. Preliminary sales data for January indicate another weak month for automakers who are now watching brand reputations level out. Continue reading
European Auto Sales down in 2011 for Fourth Straight Year
For the year American automakers General Motors finished fourth with a flat 8.7% share. Fifth place Ford Motor (8%, a slight decline) made no sales progress either, even though both companies have introduced a series of new models. Sixth place Fiat – the owner of Chrysler courtesy of American taxpayers – continues to struggle along with Italy, off almost a full percentage point in share to 7.1%. One bright spot – Jeep sales are up 63% from an admittedly small base to more than 22,000 units. Continue reading

First Lifetime Hybrid Battery Warranty On Hyundai Sonata
The announcement appears to be an opportunistic and pre-emptive use of public relations, given current Chevrolet Volt battery fire concerns. The Chevrolet Volt uses the same supplier – LG Chem – as the 2011 model Sonata Hybrid. Model year 2012 Sonata hybrid versions are just about to go on sale since Hyundai is still clearing out inventories of its 2011 Sonata Hybrid. This is a rare sales setback for Hyundai, which also captured the North American Car of the Car of the Year award for its Elantra compact car at NAIAS, and reflects a larger hybrid sales problem that most automakers have. Ford Shows Fiesta Derived EcoSport at New Delhi Auto Expo
India is projected to become the world’s third largest light vehicle market by the end of the decade behind China and the U.S. Ford lags badly behind competitors in Asia, and is playing catch-up while losing money. Continue reading

Ford Motor December Sales Up 10% Tracking Market Growth
How Ford’s sales performance is interpreted depends on whether the Number 2 U.S. automaker in sales should have picked up more than the 3.7% increase in passenger car sales (industry +9%) with all the major Japanese automakers virtually out of the market for months – May to September or later – because of natural disasters. Ford car sales were actually down 16% in December. Lavishly publicized Fiesta sub-compact and Focus compact launches were not strong successes as sticker price resistance appeared to overcome their relatively good fuel efficiency in a year when U.S. gasoline prices stayed well above $3 a gallon. Continue reading

GM U.S. Sales Up 5% in December, +14% 2011. Share Increases
GM expects full-year 2012 light vehicle sales to be in a range of 13.5 million to 14.0 million units. In previous years, GM’s forecasts were based on total vehicle sales, which included medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, or about 300,000 additional units. Continue reading

Chrysler Group December 2011 U.S. Sales Up 37%; Year +26%
Nevertheless, the sales gains were not large enough to hold off resurging Toyota Motor Sales, which displaced Chrysler from the Number Three U.S. sales spot when Toyota inventories rebuilt this fall after the Japan earthquake and tsunami tragedy in March that removed Toyota and other Japanese automakers from the market. In October and November Toyota picked up 2 market share percentage points, with December results due later today. Continue reading
Chevrolet Volt Hybrids for China arrive at Shanghai
Due to a combination of tariffs and incentives for locally-produced Chinese vehicles – at the core of China’s job creating industrial policy – the Michigan built Volt (more than $40,000 in the U.S. without government incentives) will be at about a $19,000 per hybrid disadvantage, not good news for UAW employees who build the Volt in Hamtramck. Toyota Launches Prius c Hybrid as Aqua in Japan for $21,700
In Japan the Prius c comes in seven models with a price ranging from $21,750 to $34,500 for lavishing equipped models for handicapped people. Look for the Japanese-built Prius c in the U.S. to start somewhere under $20,000 with several more expensive option packages. AutoInformed is betting Toyota will continue to use aggressive ‘comeback pricing’ and incentives to regain market share lost post-tsunami and Thailand floods this year. With the introduction of the all-new reduced price Camry last October, Toyota has regained 2 percentage points of U.S. share in the last two months. Continue reading

Cadillac CTS Touring Package All Show No Go?
Cadillac CTS Touring package is a new option – $2,065 or $2,810 depending on which V6 engine – that takes some showy stuff from the CTS V-series such as the Recaro seats, microfiber suede inserts for seats and steering wheel, high-intensity discharge headlamps, a ‘performance tuned’ suspension, the V-series aerodynamic spoiler and performance wheel packages. It’s an old automotive marketing trick used to boost revenue that is still widely used because it works even as it complicates build combinations. Continue reading
