Toyota, Honda Post Huge September Sales Gains, Nissan Stalls

Worrisome for competitors were increases in market share of 2.6% at Toyota, and 1.2% at Honda year-over-year, according to AutoData. Each percentage point in share is worth roughly $1 billion dollars in profits, according to an old industry rule of thumb. Honda Signs Joint Venture to Make Motorcycles in Bangladesh

Honda Motor Company today signed a joint venture agreement with Bangladesh Steel and Engineering Corporation (BSEC) to establish a production and sales joint venture company for motorcycles before the end of 2012. First Look – 2014 Honda Accord Plug-In Hybrid Sedan

Since electric driving depends on a tiny 6.7 kilowatt-hour (kWh) lithium-ion battery, this means the Accord plug-in will be hard pressed to stay on electricity for more than 10 or 15 miles, although it will look good on the window sticker with a projected EPA rating of greater than 100 MPG-e. The electric motors are rated at 124-kilowatt (kW). Thank goodness there is also power dense gasoline on board, so the projected range of the plug-in is almost 500 miles. Continue reading

Honda Posts $1.7 Billion Profit in Japanese Fiscal Q1

Despite the strong recovery, the results did not meet analysts’ expectations because of rising marketing costs and the strong yen. Nevertheless, Honda is sticking to its global sales forecast of 4.3 million vehicles in the Japanese fiscal year to March 2013, an increase of 38.4% from FY 2012. First 118 MPGe Honda Fit EV Delivered in California

American Honda initially will lease Fit in some California and Oregon markets. Some East Coast locations will be added next year. The EV is lease-only with a price of $389 per month for three-years, which computes to a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $36,625. Collision coverage, maintenance costs and roadside assistance service included in lease. Gasoline versions of the Fit sell in the $16,200 to $21,000 range. Continue reading

Honda Indiana Plant to Increase Capacity and Add Civic Hybrid

Honda announced at the Automotive Press Association in Detroit that it is investing $40 million to increase annual capacity by 50,000 units to 250,000 vehicles at its Indiana plant. June Auto Sales Soar with Mixed Results for Detroit Three

Sales of new cars and light trucks in June increased 22% from the same period a year ago, as the auto industry delivered almost 1.3 million vehicles for the month. On a seasonally adjusted annual basis or SAAR, this meant that the industry-selling rate continues to be more than 14 million units for five of the six months of 2012, resulting in sales of more than 7.2 million vehicles year-to-date. Germany to Add 35 New Hydrogen Fueling Stations

Honda World’s First Company to Reveal Third-party Validated Estimates of Global CO2 Emissions during Product Use

Honda Motor Company said in Japan today that it is the world’s first mobility company to disclose estimated global CO2 emissions during customer use of its motorcycles, automobiles and power products. The move will likely force other automakers who claim to be green into similar disclosures. A next step could be window or product stickers that list the effects of their use on the environment. Yazaki Exec and Autoliv Plead Guilty on Price Fixing Auto Parts

This is the first case filed relating to occupant safety systems sold to auto manufacturers as part of the DOJ’s ongoing antitrust auto parts investigation. An executive of Japan-based Yazaki Corporation has also agreed to plead guilty for his role in a separate conspiracy to fix prices of automotive wire harnesses and related products installed in U.S. cars. Japanese Big 3 – Toyota, Honda, Nissan – Sales Up in May

Toyota Motor came close to displacing Ford Motor from its assumed Number 2 spot in the U.S. by posting monthly sales of 202,973 – within a rounding error of Ford’s 215,699 and firmly putting Toyota in the Number 3 sales spot for the year-to-date. The other Japanese powerhouse members were also back in shape. American Honda posted sales of 134,000 (576,000 ytd) easily ahead of the Nissan at 92,000 (485,000 ytd). With a new Accord and Altima due this fall, the family car market is about to becomes more competitive than it has been in years, which is good for buyers but might leave weaker and older entries as road kill. Honda Makes Money on End of Life Car Recycling in Japan

Honda Motor Company in its annual report covering end of life car recycling in Japan said today it made money on the sustainability program that is part of Japanese regulations. The total cost of the recycling efforts amounted to ¥3.48 billion ($44.55 million), which was ¥290 million ($3.7 million) less than the total recycling proceeds received which was ¥3.77 billion yen.
