Toyota, Honda Post Huge September Sales Gains, Nissan Stalls
Worrisome for competitors were increases in market share of 2.6% at Toyota, and 1.2% at Honda year-over-year, according to AutoData. Each percentage point in share is worth roughly $1 billion dollars in profits, according to an old industry rule of thumb. First Look – 2014 Honda Accord Plug-In Hybrid Sedan
Since electric driving depends on a tiny 6.7 kilowatt-hour (kWh) lithium-ion battery, this means the Accord plug-in will be hard pressed to stay on electricity for more than 10 or 15 miles, although it will look good on the window sticker with a projected EPA rating of greater than 100 MPG-e. The electric motors are rated at 124-kilowatt (kW). Thank goodness there is also power dense gasoline on board, so the projected range of the plug-in is almost 500 miles. Continue reading
Honda Posts $1.7 Billion Profit in Japanese Fiscal Q1
Despite the strong recovery, the results did not meet analysts’ expectations because of rising marketing costs and the strong yen. Nevertheless, Honda is sticking to its global sales forecast of 4.3 million vehicles in the Japanese fiscal year to March 2013, an increase of 38.4% from FY 2012. North America is forecast to sell almost 40% of the total, which means a lot is riding on the success of the new Accord due this fall. Continue reading

June Auto Sales Soar with Mixed Results for Detroit Three
Sales of new cars and light trucks in June increased 22% from the same period a year ago, as the auto industry delivered almost 1.3 million vehicles for the month. The slowly recovering auto market presented mixed but arguably positive results for the Detroit Three. Continue reading

Japanese Big 3 – Toyota, Honda, Nissan – Sales Up in May
Toyota Motor came close to displacing Ford Motor from its assumed Number 2 spot in the U.S. by posting monthly sales of 202,973 – within a rounding error of Ford’s 215,699 and firmly putting Toyota in the Number 3 sales spot for the year-to-date. The other Japanese powerhouse members were also back in shape. American Honda posted sales of 134,000 (576,000 ytd) easily ahead of the Nissan at 92,000 (485,000 ytd). With a new Accord and Altima due this fall, the family car market is about to becomes more competitive than it has been in years, which is good for buyers but might leave weaker and older entries as road kill.
