Highway Trust Fund Lacks Budgetary Controls

The Highway Trust Fund report is unwelcome news for politicians of both parties who have refused to act on the problem for a decade or more, showing particular reluctance to raise taxes as the nation’s infrastructure crumbles. HTF revenues come from excise taxes on the sale of motor fuels, trucks and trailers, and truck tires, and from taxes on the use of certain kinds of vehicles. Continue reading

As Automakers Move to Eliminate Franchised Car Dealers, the “No Jobs” Debate Continues over the future of the US Economy

Not coincidentally, the survey comes as automakers are redoubling efforts to sell vehicles online as a way around traditional middlemen, specifically NADA members, which of course raises the end price of a new vehicle to buyers. Continue reading

Department of Transportation Kisses Big Oil and Railroad Butts

The problem, the deadly problem, is that many of the tank cars in use by Big Oil and the railroads to move crude oil are not safe – as the Lac-Mégantic derailment that killed 42 civilians and wiped half of a southern Quebec town proved. Continue reading

Democrats Plan to Bail Out Bankrupt Highway Trust Fund

Politicians on both sides of the aisle have refused since 1993 to raise gasoline taxes of 18.4 cents per gallon as well as a 24.4-cent diesel tax, the trust fund’s major revenue source. Inflation has raised the cost of construction, while revenue has lagged because Americans are driving less and vehicles are more fuel-efficient. Continue reading

GM Recalls More Vehicles, Some for Airbag Failures

GM did not provide a timeline explaining how long it has known about the latest safety defects. U.S. regulations only give a manufacturer five days after it discovers a safety problem to submit a recall plan to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, something GM did not do in the now notorious ignition switch recall which saw GM first deny a safety defect existed, and then issue a recall as well as an apology, and then expand the recall to cover more cars. Republicans Pass Polluter Protection Act

This latest example of the power of money in the Congress is a setback for citizens. In 2009, EPA determined that greenhouse gas pollution threatens Americans’ health and welfare by leading to long lasting changes in our climate that can have a range of negative effects on human health and the environment. Continue reading

Political Grandstanding Starts on GM Ignition Switch Deaths

In the dysfunctional ways of of now completely partisan Washington, the Republican controlled “do nothing” House is looking for political advantage here while giving the appearance that it is actually performing its legislative duties. This laughable proposition – given the record of the past decade- is increasingly hard to put forth to skeptical taxpayers of both parties. Continue reading

Chrysler Group Borrows $5 Billion to Pay off UAW VEBA Debt

Before the bankruptcy, the UAW had previously – and reluctantly – accepted the notes to cover the health care costs of its retired members. This was a classic, many would say infamous, example of financial engineering under the Wall-Street-owned Bush Administration that removed union health care costs from the balance sheets of Chrysler, Ford and General Motors with a slight of hand trick.
