The Renault AK is the world’s first Grand Prix-winning car, but it wasn’t racing as we now know it. Staged at Le Mans in 1906, the 64-mile route consisted of asphalt roads. The race saw 32 competitors starting at 90-second intervals. They drove six times a day for two days. Total race distance was 769 miles.

Volkswagen ID.R Sets New EV Record on The Nürburgring

AutoInformed.com on Volkswagen ID.R With Two Electric Motors on Record Lap at Nordschleife

Well, VW didn’t have to cheat on the diesel emissions with an EV.

The Volkswagen ID.R, powered by two electric motors, lapped the Nürburgring-Nordschleife in 6:05.336 minutes – faster than any electric vehicle before it. Romain Dumas (F) beat the previous record set by Peter Dumbreck (GB, NIO EP9) in 2017 by 40.564 seconds. Video: Volkswagen ID.R sets new electric record on the Nürburgring

A comparatively narrow track—13 miles long, with 75 corners, and regularly climbing or descending through the Eifel forests—the Nordschleife, which was opened in 1927, is one of a kind and continues to serve as a test environment for the automobile industry. Former Formula 1 world champion, Jackie Stewart, once only half-jokingly called the circuit the “Green Hell.” Continue reading

The fuel violation was discovered during a routine sampling audit of an import marine vessel at the Port of Los Angeles. Honda Fastest in Practice for Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix

AutoInformed.com on Alexander Rossi in a Honda During Detroit Grand Prix Practice

So far it’s Honda out front, but that’s why they run the race…

Ah, the p.r. perils of sports sponsorships: Alexander Rossi was fastest in practice for the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix, leading the field by more than a half-second with his fastest lap. Driving the No. 27 NAPA AUTO PARTS Honda, Rossi navigated the bUmPy street course at Belle Isle Park in 1 minute, 15.1367 seconds (112.595 mph) to record the best lap among the day’s three practice sessions. As an aside, Belle Isle would have reverted to an urban slum garbage dump if not for racing sponsorships and some deft behind the scenes maneuvering by the Penske family.

Josef Newgarden was second in the second practice and for the day with a lap of 1:15.6641 (111.810 mph) in the No. 2 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet. Continue reading

Ferrari SF90 Stradale – a New Production +$500,000 Supercar

AutoInformed.com on Ferrari SF90 Stradale

A Ferrari V8 is now the top of the line?

Enzo Ferrari once famously said when asked about the horsepower of a new car – too much is just enough. Enter the most powerful Prancing Horse car ever with the introduction of its first series production PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), the SF90 Stradale.

The SF90 is immoderate on every level because it delivers unprecedented performance for a production car. Figures such as 1000 horsepower with three electric motors helping and 390 kg of downforce at 250 km/h not only put the SF90 Stradale at the top of its segment, but also mean that a V8 is the top-of-the-range model for the first time in the marque’s history. It can travel up to 15.5 miles (25 km) in zero-emissions electric power only – making legal in cities that ban use of conventional gasoline engines. Continue reading

Hyundai Shows Performance Control for Commercial EVs

AutoInformed.com on Hyundai Motor Group Performance Control for Commercial EVs

F=MA.

Hyundai Motor Group has shown a system that estimates the gross vehicle weight of a light-duty commercial electric vehicle and optimizes performance. The development is claimed as a first-ever for the industry, using acceleration sensors to optimize the vehicle’s settings based on current gross weight estimate. The technology is being considered by Hyundai Motor Group for use on future light duty electric commercial vehicles.

The ability to calculate the gross weight of a moving vehicle in theory means that an electric vehicle’s torque output can be optimized to maximize estimated remaining range. This reduces potential wheel spin and reduced traction when a vehicle is carrying less payload, increasing commercial efficiency. The new technology also allows for changes in torque output based on topography, altering the amount of torque needed to propel a vehicle uphill based on its gross. Continue reading
