BMW Group Q1 – Record Deliveries of 637,000, up 33%

The BMW Group set a new record for first-quarter deliveries with an increase of 33.4% to 636,606 units compared to the previous year in 2020 of 477,111. Q1 financial results showed a return in booming automotive segments of 9.8% EBIT. Demand for electrified vehicles – plug-in hybrids and fully electric – contributed to sales performance, with deliveries more than doubling compared to the same quarter one year earlier with a total of 70,207 electrified vehicles delivered to customers during the three-month period (2020: 30,692 units; +128.7%), including 14,161 units of the fully electric BMW iX3, BMW i3 and MINI Cooper SE models (2020: 6,457 units; +119.3%).

Improved revenues and earnings of €4.26 per share were driven by a combination of higher sales volume figures across all regions of the world, particularly in China, and higher selling prices. Helpful effects also came from the sharp rise in prices of used vehicles, causing revenues from the sale of previously leased vehicles to rise, above all in the USA where the Biden Administration economy is soaring. Group revenues grew by 15.2% to €26,778 million (2020: €23,252 million; +18.9% adjusted for currency factors). Continue reading

Ken Zino of AutoInformed.com on Biden Administration’s Winning Government Policies

US new light-vehicle sales in total represented an 18.5 million-unit SAAR, the highest monthly sales rate since July 2005 with a 20.6 million SAAR. This refreshing rejuvenation is partly the results of improved social, health and economic conditions under the successful Biden Administration that acted urgently to quell the largest public health crisis in US history that the previous Administration either ignored or promoted. Enjoy the flowers that are coming your way.

Demand exceeding supply – while good for sellers – has its negative side as well. J.D. Power says average incentive spending per unit in April will likely total $3,191, a drop of $1,762 from the highs of April 2020 pandemic shutdown, but off  $382 from April 2019. This of course raises the specter of an affordability crisis, which has haunted auto executive offices in the past. Continue reading

Audi claimed it is not aware of any field cases in the United States.

This can lead to a loss of vehicle control and a crash without warning… Due to stress corrosion on the lock nuts of these particular production batches, the nut of the excentric (sic) bolt on the trailing arm of the rear axle may break which may cause alterations in the wheel alignment of the rear axle. The driver may notice a steering wheel misalignment when driving straight ahead or the vehicle pulling to one side when braking or accelerating.” Continue reading

Representatives from each company will join Solid Power’s board.

Of the three companies in the new agreement, BMW Group is the clear leader in electrification. Its Neue Klasse presented in March said this new generation of vehicles, due by the middle of this decade, will be “uncompromisingly electric, digital, circular – and clearly focused on all-electric drivetrains.” As auto industry observers well know, the road from test labs, to concepts, to prototypes, to successful mass production of a vehicle is littered with road kills of technological promises.
