Camaro, Corvette Auto Transmissions Faster than Manuals

The latest evidence against manual shifting comes from Chevrolet whose paddle shifter automatic transmissions on Camaro and Corvette models in 2012 have a new software algorithm that improves tap response time ~60% compared to the previous system. As a result, the 2012 Camaro ZL1’s six-speed automatic transmission has a 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds – a tenth of a second faster than GM’s official manual transmission time. Continue reading

Happy Washington’s Non Birthday, aka Presidents Day

George Washington’s birthday was first officially honored in 1879 by an act of Congress using the real date of 22 February. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1971 moved the celebration to the third Monday in February, which meant that the holiday could never fall on the first president’s birthday whether you use the Julian or Gregorian calendars. Presidents Day is not an official federal holiday but has become known for auto sales and other retail sales promotions. Continue reading

Autoliv Side Curtain Airbag Recall Grows – Now Includes Nissan, Subaru, Toyota, Honda and Acura Vehicles

What was an old munitions plant in Utah now owned by global auto supplier AutoLiv is sending shock waves into auto plants around the world because the side curtain airbag inflators it made are defective. The charge that releases the compressed gas that inflates the airbag may not explode during an accident, thereby rendering the airbag ineffective. Factories in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Japan and China are affected by the growing recall. Continue reading

Honda Safety Recall Grows to Civic and Acura MDX vehicles

While this recall appears relatively minor, another Honda airbag recall at the end of last year was not. That was when Honda once again expanded a recall covering the driver’s side airbag installed on its most popular cars, crossovers and minivans built in 2001 and 2002. The ongoing global safety defect has now resulted in recalls in North America, Japan, Australia and other regions. Millions of defective Honda and Acura vehicles are now affected this manufacturing flaw. Honda is experiencing something similar to Toyota’s quality meltdown. During the past year or so, Honda has issued more than 24 public statements about various safety defects and recalls in the U.S. The question remains will NHTSA fine Honda, absent the high profile, highly critical Congressional hearings that Toyota and NHTSA endured, or the egregious behavior of BMW that NHTSA called out last week? EU Car Sales off 7% in January, Fifth Year of Declines?

EU car sales dropped yet again in January by 7.1% compared to a year ago, a troubling trend since car sales have declined for four straight years in the moribund European Union. The latest sales data from ACEA, the trade group of EU automakers, confirm what individual car company financial results have been indicating – the European economy continues to contract, and at rates greater than automakers anticipated as recently as last quarter or the quarter before that.

In total, 968,769 new registrations were recorded in the 26-nation EU region during January, which had on average one more working day than January 2011. Particularly hard hit were France (-20.7% for the second largest market) and Italy (-16.9% for the third largest market), with large negative consequences at PSA Group (-14.9%), Renault Group (-25.2%) and Fiat Group (-16.2 %.)

Germany (-0.4% for the largest EU market) and the United Kingdom (0% or flat for the fourth largest market) remained stable, with beneficial results for the biggest automaker in Europe, VW Group with its commanding 24% market share. Continue reading

NHTSA Proposes Distracted Driving Guidelines for Automakers

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced today groundbreaking federal guidelines for automakers to limit the ‘distraction risk’ caused by the growing number of in-vehicle electronic devices. The new distracted driving design recommendations appeared to catch automakers off guard since they did not have a ready response.

Moreover, NHTSA said this was only the first of a series of proposed distracted driving design practices that manufacturers can use to ensure the systems or devices in their vehicles are less likely to distract drivers and cause accidents. The intent is to “limit tasks not directly relevant to safely operating the vehicle, or cause undue distraction by engaging the driver’s eyes or hands for more than a very limited duration while driving.”

While not a formal regulation (yet?), the voluntary design standards from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration bring additional pressure on automakers to reform automotive electronics. Thus far automakers have ignored with impunity the deadly results from the consequences of the growing use of an increasing array of in-vehicle electronic devices and screens. Even if they don’t become regulations, the guidelines will make it difficult for consumer organizations – say Consumer Reports – to recommend vehicles that don’t meet them. And you can be sure that NHTSA will ultimately incorporate them into its own safety ratings. Continue reading

Milestones: Cadillac Electric Starter Eliminates Hand Cranking

One hundred years ago the electric starter debuted in the 1912 Cadillac Touring Edition helped establish Cadillac’s reputation while increasing its sales. It’s hard to imagine but before the invention of the electric starter by Charles Kettering it took hand cranking, considerable muscle, and some luck to wake up a Tin Lizzie or one of its ilk. Cranking fathered the American slang term ‘cranky,’ which was said to describe someone’s mood after struggling to start a car. Continue reading
