Honda Goes All in for Ohio EV Production

 It all started with the Accord – a perennial best seller.

American Honda Motor said today that it will re-tool its existing operations in Ohio to produce EVs. The $700 million investment will go to the Marysville Auto Plant, East Liberty Auto Plant and Anna Engine Plant, as well as the Honda associates who work there, for the start of EV production and EV components.

This follows the announcement yesterday of a new battery plant in Ohio, exactly 45 years after Honda announced it would build cars in the US – the first Japanese automaker to do so. There are now five Honda auto plants here with total production during the past four decades of 30 million cars and light trucks. Ohio JV Battery Plant  – Honda and LG Energy Solution

Honda LG JV Signing Ceremony – courtesy and copyright HondaHonda and LG Energy Solution (LGES; KRX: 373220) today confirmed that their new joint venture battery plant will be located in Fayette County, Ohio, about 40 miles southwest of Columbus. The plant was announced in April of 2022 but not its location. Claimed are investments of $3.5 billion and 2,200  new jobs, pending final government approvals. The two companies plan to begin construction in early 2023, in order to complete the new production facility by the end of 2024. The plant aims to have ~40GWh of annual production capacity as it starts mass production of pouch-type lithium-ion batteries by the end of 2025. Continue reading →

General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) said to today it has obtained a new source of cost-competitive nickel and cobalt for Ultium battery cells after making a “strategic investment” in Queensland Pacific Metals of Australia.

The so-called nickel laterite ore is expected to be processed using a new and proprietary method that helps reduce waste with no requirement of a tailings dam, GM claimed. GM is expected to invest up to $69 million in Queensland Pacific Metals for the development of its proposed Townsville Energy Chemicals Hub (TECH) Project in Northern Australia. GM claimed that it will connect [err, plug-in?] customers “seamlessly with residential, fleet and commercial energy assets.

General Motors (NYSE: GM) today announced the introduction of Ultium Home and Ultium Commercial, which in combination with the existing Ultium Charge 360, to create a system of energy management products and services that will be housed under a new business unit called GM Energy.

It’s an ambitious, industry leading program that can help customers rid themselves of some of the negative aspects of relying on utility companies. GM Energy’s services will also enable the sale of energy from EV and stationary storage batteries back to utilities during peak, high energy consumption periods, unlocking even more potential value for customers and increasing resiliency for the electrical grid, GM said. The fastener connecting the front upper-control arm and steering knuckle may have been improperly tightened on 12,212 vehicles. An improperly torqued steering knuckle fastener could cause excessive wheel camber or a separation, affecting the driver’s ability to control the vehicle, and thereby increasing the risk of a crash. Stellantis (NYSE: MTA. Euronext Paris: STLA) and GME Resources (ASX: GME) announced today signed a MoU on the sale of of battery nickel and cobalt sulphate from Western Australia. (AutoInformed – Stellantis Claims Record First Year with €13.4B Net Profit)

NiWest is an advanced nickel-cobalt development project in Western Australia that hopes to produce ~90,000 tpa (tons per annum) of battery grade nickel and cobalt sulphate for the electric vehicle market. To date, more than AU$30 million has been invested into drilling, metallurgical test work and development studies. Continue reading →

The mildly tweaked 2023 Versa will debut at the Miami Auto Show this weekend, Nissan said today. The five-passenger compact sedan is notable for its price – starting around $17,000 this year, and an increasingly rare five-speed manual transmission.

It’s the usual mid-cycle freshening with a changed front fascia and grille. New options include a wireless device charging pad, Wi-Fi hotspot and an 8-inch touchscreen. The Western Europe selling rate decreased to 10.5 million units/year in September, from 12.4 million in August the LMC Automotive* consultancy said today.

Western European countries continue to be afflicted with supply problems. Compared to September 2021, registration numbers grew by 7.6% to 953,000 units. The year-to-date (YTD) selling rate was up a tad, but remains flat at 10.0 million units/year, with a 6% drop compared to 2021. Continue reading →

Honda will hold five student events in October, Manufacturing Month, at plants in Alabama, Ohio and Indiana.

Honda said today that for the first time in two years, it will host high school students during in-person Manufacturing Day events at its plants. Honda is returning to in-person events after two years of virtual Manufacturing Day activities.

Students who attend in-person events will meet with Honda associates and participate in hands-on activities that highlight different manufacturing areas and career paths. Manufacturing Day was developed by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), to promote a positive perception of today’s manufacturing careers. Continue reading →

The US Environmental Protection Agency today announced a proposed determination that emissions of lead* from aircraft that operate on leaded fuel cause or contribute to air pollution that may reasonably be anticipated to endanger public health and welfare. 

Under the Clean Air Act, EPA reviews information on air pollutants and sources of air pollution to determine whether they threaten human health or welfare. This “endangerment finding” is the first step in using EPA’s authority to address this source of lead pollution. EPA Looking at EVs and the Toxic Substances Control Act

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced a new effort under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) to implement a “streamlined and efficient process under the New Chemicals Program to assess risk and apply mitigation measures, as appropriate, for new chemicals with applications in batteries, electric vehicles, semiconductors and renewable energy generation.”

It’s the latest example of a regulatory body realizing that battery-powered vehicles present, well, challenges under existing regulations or the lack thereof. It’s a global trend and problem. Under TSCA, EPA’s New Chemicals Program plays a key role by reviewing all new substances before they enter the marketplace in order to bring innovative chemistries in a way that doesn’t harm human health or the environment. The Mustang Supercar was built by Ford’s homologation team Dick Johnson Racing with Ford Performance in preparation for the 2023 season.

Ford today showed the first race-prepared seventh-generation Mustang, the 2023 Mustang GT, which was uncovered at Mount Panorama ahead of the famous Bathurst 1000 ‘down under.’ The road-going versions of so-called Gen3 Mustang were revealed in Detroit last month. Back then there were only computer-generated images of the race cars shown.

This GT is a precursor of the next generation of Ford performance race cars, including an anticipated return to LeMans during 2024 in an IMSA GT category. Ford Motor says the 2022 Ford GT LM Edition celebrates Ford GT’s race-winning success. It the final special edition for the current-generation road cars. However, the so-called Mustang Dark Horse is the first new performance name for the brand since Mustang Bullitt was introduced in 2001. The street and track-capable performance MDH is Ford’s next racer. Biggest news  is that Mustang will return to Le Mans. (AutoInformed. Com on Late to the Daytona Grid – Ford to Run in GT3 in 2024)

Since Ford is investing $50 billion in electric vehicles through 2026, it needs to wring every profitable nickel out of selling what it has now. Enter the 2022 Ford GT LM Edition available with red or blue design trim that include tinted red or blue carbon fiber exterior “treatment and a driver’s seat in the corresponding color.” Twenty will be made. Deliveries begin this fall with production ending later this year. The Ford GT already started at $500,000+. I’d double down on that with $1,000,000 a starting bid. Continue reading →

Conflicting data abounds in global vehicle sales trends during the past few months of stronger selling rates. From a global perspective this is mostly the result of a fast improvement in the China market from a temporary purchase tax cut on cars.

“Across much of the world, supply bottlenecks remain the key reason for holding back better sales results. However, as Europe and North America head into the winter months, economic prospects look increasingly dismal in the face of stubbornly high inflation, and underlying demand for new vehicles is inevitably being eroded,” according to respected consultancy LMC Automotive this morning. As the seasons turn, the US light vehicle market continues to exhibit mixed signals this year with often conflicting or seemingly wrong trends and developments.

New light-vehicle sales in September 2022 resulted in a SAAR of 13.5 million units. This was an increase of  9.6% from a year ago. The increase in volume, along with record transaction prices, result in consumers on a pace to spend ~$43.7 billion on new vehicles in September – the highest level ever in September and a 12% increase from September 2021.

However, September 2021 was the weakest since May 2020, because of pandemic induced supply chain disruptions and parts shortages, which saw the lowest saleable inventory for more than three decades. Continue reading →
