Milestones: U.S. Population of 312.8 Million on New Year’s Day

Through 2050, the United States is projected to remain in third place behind India and China among the world’s most populous countries with 423 million inhabitants. China of course has been the world’s largest auto market for three years now, and will likely remain so for the next decade. While this looks like a large increases in the number of persons in the U.S., the rate of population growth, is projected to decrease during the next six decades by about 50 %. The decrease in the rate of growth is mostly due to the aging of the population and, consequently, a dramatic increase in the number of deaths. From 2030 to 2050, the United States would grow more slowly than ever before in its history, potentially an economic disaster with potentially grave implications for economic expansion, revenue and national wealth. Payroll Tax Cut and Unemployment Scrap Ends Temporarily

The dysfunctional Washington government finally agreed to extend a payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits after President Obama stared down a divided Republican party by threatening to stay in town while the Congress ‘vacationed,’ which most voters would have a hard time discerning anyway given the gridlock in Washington.

Gallup has Congressional Approval rating at 11% an all time low, which makes Obama’s low 49% rating looking like grounds for a Democratic landslide next year. Continue reading

GM Plans Four World Debuts at NAIAS. Where is Bob Lutz?

“ATS enters the biggest market segment in the global luxury car industry, both in terms of volume and importance,” said Barra.

No kidding. ATS better be good when it appears next fall.

But when I asked what GM consultant Bob Lutz was doing these days, Barra said she was trading e-mails with him about getting Lutz to drive a new Chevy Sonic, which has been on sale globally for a couple of years. While Barra called Lutz an “automotive rock star,” there was no hint in her brief response that she was spending any time with Lutz. Continue reading

The Opel Board, as well as GM’s Board of Directors, has the task of returning GM’s European Operations to sustainable profitability, after years of stopgap measures by previous GM management teams that did not accomplish this. Further cost cutting is needed, which likely means politically contentious plant closures. On a Q3 earnings phone call with reporters earlier this month, CFO Amman said that nothing would be ruled out to return Opel to profitability. Continue reading
