Porsche at the 30th anniversary of the Goodwood Festival of Speed debuted the Porsche Vision 357 Speedster. The new concept car shown on the grounds of the Duke of Richmond in West Sussex is a variant of the closed Porsche Vision 357, that the sports car manufacturer used to launch its 48th anniversary observances earlier this year.

“The Porsche Vision 357 is a nod to the first Porsche model line, Ferry Porsche’s dream sports car. And since the 356 has burned itself into the collective brand memory as both a convertible and a coupé, the same logic applies to the concept car: there can only be two,” said Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche. “The Porsche Vision 357 Speedster embodies the essence of the brand. Driving pleasure and driving dynamics combined with an extremely purist form. As with the Mission X that we presented just a few weeks ago, this model demonstrates that even with fresh design genes, the Porsche DNA shines through.” Continue reading

This morning, the reformed UAW initiated what it called a new UAW tradition, the Members Handshake in place of past practices. Instead of kicking off Big Three negotiations with what it called “a dog and pony show shaking hands with CEOs, we’re putting the membership first,” the UAW told members. Progressive, reform President Shawn Fain and International Executive Board members went to shake hands with workers at what previously would have been called Detroit Three plants. (AutoInformed:UAW Blasts Biden and Inflation Reduction Act)

“We have a once in a generation opportunity to make things right at the Big Three. We’re fighting to end tiers, to win back COLA and fair raises, and to secure our jobs in this transition to electric vehicles. If we stick together, as a united UAW, there’s nothing we can’t achieve. Let’s go make history,” the UAW said. Continue reading

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has confirmed another Takata rupture fatality, the first due to an exploding passenger-side inflator that sends shrapnel about the interior. The incident is also the first in a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500, which was one of the 385,686 recalled in 2015. As a result, If you have one of these vehicles, DO NOT DRIVE it until the recall is completed and your defective air bag is replaced, NHTSA said today.

“The older a defective Takata air bag inflator gets, the more dangerous it becomes. Please, get your air bag replaced now for your sake, and for the sake of those who love you,” said NHTSA Acting Administrator Ann Carlson. “Don’t put yourself or someone you love at risk of dying or being seriously injured because of a defective, recalled Takata air bag. These repairs are absolutely free and could save your life.” Continue reading

About 1 in 4 people in the United States are socially vulnerable and have low resilience to extreme heat exposure, according to new US Census Bureau data released today. The so-called “Community Resilience Estimates” (CRE)* for Heat, an awakened experimental data model released in April, measures the capacity of individuals and households in a community to withstand the stress of exposure to extreme heat based on their social characteristics.

The experimental climate-focused data product was developed with Arizona State University’s Knowledge Exchange for Resilience (KER). The product was released at a joint Census Bureau-KER climate resilience symposium in Washington, DC. The first CRE was published as an experimental data product in June 2020 to provide information about the COVID-19 pandemic. It was also published to garner feedback from data users and stakeholders on the quality and usefulness of such a product. Continue reading

UAW Say GM’s Lordstown JV Battery Plant Dangerous

Ken Zino of AutoInformed.com on UAW Say GM's Lordstown JV Battery Plant Dangerous

Click for more information.

The United Auto Workers Union today released a study called “High Risk & Low Pay: A Case Study of Ultium Cells Lordstown,” that emphasizes “the dangerous working conditions at General Motors’ joint-venture battery cell plant in Lordstown, Ohio.”* It includes worker testimonials and health. The white paper follows a video released last week, “Our Defining Moment,” with Ultium workers speaking out on the risk of a failed transition to electric vehicles if companies like General Motors continue to pursue what the UAW led by a progressive Shawn Fain calls “a low-road approach.” (AutoInformed: UAW Blasts Biden and Inflation Reduction Act)

“This case study of Ultium Cells Lordstown shows there is a real danger that hundreds of billions in taxpayer dollars will subsidize an EV industry that underpays and endangers workers. Ultium is a joint venture of General Motors and LG Energy Solution. Its Lordstown, Ohio, plant makes the battery cells that power GM’s growing EV fleet. Ultium’s Lordstown plant could qualify for tax credits worth more than $1 billion a year,” the UAW said. Continue reading

UAW Blasts Biden and Inflation Reduction Act

Late Friday the UAW once again blasted the bipartisan Inflation Reduction Act in its latest attempt to protect the jobs, health, and safety of its members. Using data from a new Good Jobs First* report, “Power Outrage: Will Heavily Subsidized Battery Factories Generate Substandard Jobs?” the union pointed out that “Under a provision of the Inflation Reduction Act, some factories making batteries for electric vehicles will each receive more than a billion dollars per year from the U.S. government, with no requirement to pay good wages to production workers. Thanks to the Advanced Manufacturing Production Credit, also called 45X for its section in the Internal Revenue Code, battery companies will receive tax credits that they can use, sell, or cash out.” Since this is a UAW contract year the outlook for Automakers remains stormy, with strikes clearly a threat. (AutoInformed on EV Politics – Biden versus the UAW)

“The so called 45X program alone will cost taxpayers more than $200 billion in the next decade, far more than the $31 billion estimated by Congress’s Joint Committee on Taxation. On top of 45X and other federal incentives, factories manufacturing electric vehicles and batteries have also been promised well over $13 billion in state and local economic development incentives in just the past 18 months,” the UAW said. US States Lagging Badly on EV Adoption Policies

Ken Zino of AutoInformed.com on US States Lagging Badly on EV Adoption Policies

Click to see more of the problem.

While some states are clearly leading and strengthening policies to enable widespread use of electric cars, trucks, and buses, all states will have to significantly step up their efforts to enable a full transition, says a new report from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). The 2023 State Transportation Electrification Scorecard evaluates states’ policies to encourage electric vehicle (EV) adoption. Only nine states scored more than half the points available. (AutoInformed: Watt? Electric Cars Cause Another Great Generational Divide

“We are seeing incremental progress, not transformational progress. States will have to move far more aggressively to do their part to enable the electric vehicle transition that the climate crisis demands,” said Peter Huether, senior research associate at ACEEE and the lead writer of the report. “Auto manufacturers are expanding their EV options and consumers are increasingly choosing them, but supportive state policies are needed to ensure that the electric grid is ready and that all households and businesses, including those in under-served communities, can use EVs and have adequate access to charging.” Continue reading

Mercedes-Benz NA adding Tesla Supercharger Network

Click on a Supercharger for more.

Mercedes-Benz  said today that drivers can use Tesla Superchargers in North America starting in 2024, in an attempt to expand electric vehicle sales appeal by providing full access to all major charging networks. The move follows other major automakers already in the process of plugging in to the network – notably Ford and GM – since there are more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers across North America right now. Mercedes-Benz will be the first German automaker to implement the so-called NACS ports into its new electric vehicles starting in 2025 as part o an attempt to have one universal charging system hookup.

As part of a phased transition, Mercedes-Benz will initially offer an adapter (these can be clumsy to use – AutoCrat) that enables the company’s existing CCS BEVs to charge on the NACS network from 2024 onwards. Even though more public charging stations are in operation than ever, customer satisfaction with public Level 2 charging declined from last year, dropping to 633 (on a 1,000-point scale) from 643 in 2021, while satisfaction with the speedier DC (direct current) fast charger segment remains flat at 674, J.D. Power told AutoInformed last August. Continue reading

BMW Motorrad USA today announced the new 2024 BMW CE 02 – an electric two-wheeler something or other. BMW said (marketing babble alert> “it’s electric, designed to appeal to young people and it’s neither an e-motorbike nor an e-scooter. It’s an eParkourer (sic), created for the urban environment. Large wheels meet the demand for robustness and at the same time ensure riding fun on many differing terrains.” Whatever it is, when it rolls into the US, the MSRP will be $7599 plus destination, plus accessories, plus taxes. CE 02 has a top speed of 59 mph, a zero-to-30 mph acceleration time of 3 seconds, and a range of ~56 miles.

“With the CE 02, we are striving for something new at BMW Motorrad and want to be pioneers once again. Thanks to its unusual proportions and striking graphics, the new CE 02 is an uncomplicated, youthful form of single-track mobility. The reduced design language stands for lightness and fun. The focus is not on utility, but on emotional appeal, riding pleasure and uncomplicated, almost intuitive use,” said Edgar Heinrich, Head of BMW Motorrad Design. Continue reading
