“We’re bringing our proven electric technology to a whole new class of production vehicles,” said Tetsuo Ogawa, president and chief executive officer, Toyota Motor North America. “Heavy-duty truck manufacturers will be able to buy a fully integrated and validated fuel cell electric drive system, allowing them to offer their customers an emissions-free option in the Class 8 heavy-duty segment.” Continue reading

Chinese Junk Watch – Six More Recalls from CPSC

A glance at The United States Consumer Products Safety Commission web site once again reaffirms that China is manufacturing many products sold in the US. Moreover, recalls keep coming. CPSC is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death associated with the use of the thousands of types of consumer products under the agency’s jurisdiction.

Deaths, injuries, and property damage from consumer product incidents cost the US more than $1 trillion annually, according to the CPSC. CPSC triee to protect consumers and families from products that pose a fire, electrical, chemical, or mechanical hazard. CPSC’s work to ensure the safety of consumer products – such as toys, cribs, power tools, cigarette lighters, and household chemicals – contributed to a decline in the rate of deaths and injuries associated with consumer products over the past 40 years. However, in AutoInformed’s view, Chinese products remain a problem both in their design and manufacturing quality control. Herewith are some of the latest in Chinese Junk. Continue reading

Chinese Covid Recovery Policies is Zero-Sum Game for Automakers Overall. Luxury, Compact Segments Benefit Most?

Ken Zino of Auto Informed.com on Chinese Government Covid Recovery Policies Zero-Sum game for Automakers

The Chinese Passenger Vehicle market is on track for sales of ~22 million units in 2021 – equal to the 2019 level. But the segment mix will differ from 2019, and “the rate of recovery from the 2020 decline will be far from uniform across the various sales groups per LMC. In terms of market status the Premium share is expected to improve from 14% in 2019 to 18%. The Low-Cost segment is forecast to end 2021 with 2% market share, up from 0.5% in 2019. Click to Enlarge.

The Chinese central government put into action a series of policies focused on ample monetary funding and pro-active fiscal measures during the still ongoing Covid crisis. With the effective containment of the virus in China from strong government public health/common good rules and regulations, the government intervention resulted in a quick economic recovery. While the auto market in other major economies floundered during the second half of 2020, the Chinese auto market beat expectations. The recovery continues during 2021.

As with most statistics though, the devil is hiding in the details. Consultancy LMC Automotive says there is an enduring imbalance in the economy’s internal structure: the performance of the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) among medium and large enterprises is significantly better than that among smaller enterprises. Toyota First Hypercar Winner at Le Mans in Fourth Straight Victory. Ferrari First then Corvette, Porsche in GTE Pro

Ken Zino of Auto Informed.com on Le Mans 2021

What no German factory teams competitive in Hyper Car?!

Toyota Gazoo Racing achieved a notable and theatrical fourth consecutive Le Mans 24 Hours victory to become the first Hypercar winners at the Circuit de la Sarthe. The No. 7 Toyota GR010 Hybrid Hypercar driven by Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Jose Maria Lopez ended their streak of mechanical disasters at Le Mans to take their first victory at the legendary 24-hour race, which this year saw the return of a limited number of fans.

The No. 7’s win is only the second time ever that an Argentine (Jose Maria Lopez) has won Le Mans and is the team’s seventh consecutive WEC race victory. The Hypercar finished two laps ahead of the sister No. 8 car with Brendon Hartley, Kazuki Nakajima and Sebastien Buemi sharing the wheel. (Hypercar Hype or Close Racing Next Week at Le Mans? Confirmed: General Motors to Recall more Bolt EVs at $1B Cost

Ken Zino of Auto Informed.com on General Motors is expanding the current Chevrolet Bolt EV Recall

All Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles are now recalled.

General Motors is expanding the current Chevrolet Bolt EV recall to cover the remaining 2019 and all 2020-2022 model year vehicles, including the Bolt EUV. With this expansion, all Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles are now recalled due to the risk of the high-voltage battery pack catching fire.

“In rare circumstances, the batteries supplied to GM for these vehicles may have two manufacturing defects – a torn anode tab and folded separator – present in the same battery cell, which increases the risk of fire,” GM said in a statement. GM will replace defective battery modules in Chevrolet Bolt EVs and EUVs with new modules, with an expected additional cost of approximately $1 billion.  (AutoInformedNHTSA – Urgent Fire Recall Again on 2017-2019 Chevrolet Bolts) Continue reading

Special Editions Dream or Nightmare?

Ken Zino of Auto Informed.com on Mustang Ice White Edition Appearance Package

Maybe Ford should spend a little more money on locations?

Today in what Ford Motor says is in celebration of the Woodward Dream Cruise kickoff, Ford is introducing the new Mustang Ice White Edition Appearance Package for both Mustang coupe and Mustang Mach-E models. This marks the first time in 28 years Ford is offering a white-on-white Mustang and the first time ever for the coupe. This of course begs the question are special editions special given that Mustang by some measures [1] is the most popular sports car in the world?

“Mustang has always had the power to attract attention on the road, but the new Mustang Ice White Edition could – just like the original ’93 Triple White Fox body feature Mustang – become one of the hot collectibles of future generations,” counters Jim Owens, Mustang brand marketing manager, not without self-interest. “We are proud to continue a longstanding Mustang tradition of continuously offering fresh, new styling options for customers to empower them to make their Mustang an extension of who they are.” Continue reading
