Japanese Price Fixing Scandal Expands with Two More Indictments and Prison Sentences for Three Takata Executives

Including Hayashi and Nonoyama, 21 companies and 26 executives thus far have been charged in the Justice Department’s ongoing investigation into the automotive parts industry. To date, more than $1.6 billion in criminal fines have been obtained and seventeen of the charged executives have been sentenced to serve time in U.S. prisons or have entered into plea agreements calling for significant prison sentences. Treasury Out of General Motors Stock by Year End

During 2009 when the Bush Administration’s Great Recession was in full force and worsening, the U.S. government via taxpayers gave GM $49.5 billion in loans ($50 billion including loans for the Supplier and Warranty Programs) in exchange for $2.1 billion in preferred stock and a 60.8% equity stake in the reorganized company. Treasury has been selling the stock since late last year. A quick back of the envelope calculation at current market rates shows that taxpayers will ultimately lose ~$10 billion. Continue reading

November U.S. Sales Forecast at 1.2 Million

Through the first half of November, the average transaction price of new vehicles is $30,079, an increase of $461 from November 2012. Sales and transaction price increases mean that consumers will spend 10% more on new vehicles during the month than they did in November 2012, and nearly double the level of November 2008 during the Bush Administration’s Great Recession. EU Posts Second Straight Month of Gains in Car Sales
