Testosterone and Tesla – Men Love Them
As with all things associated with Tesla, AutoInformed remains skeptical about a company that has never showed a profit since its inception except in Q1 of 2013. For the first six months of this year, Tesla lost $1,916 per car based on a net loss of $19.254 million from sales of 10,000 Model S and a few Roadster EVs, which was -$0.17 a share. With Tesla stock trading in the $190 range for a book value of $5 a share, buyer beware, seller rejoice. Continue reading

BMW Recalls 5-Series Cars for Defective Rear Lights
BMW said that it does not believe a safety defect exists but is recalling the cars anyway. While likely such language is lawyer dictated, the Bavarians have a precarious relationship with U.S. safety regulators. Previously BMW was fined by NHTSA for covering up safety defects. Continue reading

Nissan Exports RHD Pathfinder SUVs from U.S.
Several factors are in play here. The weakness of the Japanese Yen during the past several years has forced Japanese production offshore. Even though the Japanese government is now manipulating the Yen to make it stronger, Japanese companies are still proceeding with plans to export from the U.S. that were put in place during the last decade. A built in the USA label can be positive especially for trucks. Continue reading
Autonomous Vehicles by 2020. Legal Issues Slow Use
The classic ‘who pays’ problem is the core issue. Automakers might assume responsibility for their vehicles, but it is improbable that they will assume responsibility for safely operating them. There remain significant technical barriers as well. Computing power, glitch free software development, high-end image processing and sensor cost and coordination are all issues. Continue reading

U.S. July Jobs Numbers are Dreadful
Even though the latest economic data show that the contraction during the Great Recession was slightly less severe than previously reported, it remains the largest decline since quarterly data became available in 1947. Cumulatively, real GDP fell by 4.3% during the recession. Moreover, the jobs lost then have never been recovered. Continue reading

DOT Wants to Eliminate Needless Trucking Paperwork
In what has been a largely symbolic act, President Obama launched the Administration’s regulatory initiative in January 2011 by issuing Executive Order 13563. That called for a government-wide review of regulations on the books, with the goal of eliminating or modifying out-of-date, ineffective or overly burdensome regulations. Not much of substance came from the bureaucracy. Continue reading

Electric Cars and Solar Cells are not so Clean
“Stating that an electric car is clean is like saying that a light bulb is clean. Light bulbs do not produce exhaust, but it doesn’t mean we can use them with zero emissions. The same holds true for electric cars,” said Zehner in an NPR interview Monday. Continue reading
