The UK automotive industry’s production carbon footprint fell by -11.2% in 2021 compared with the previous year to reach its lowest level since records began, according to new research released today from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The report also pulls together data from where its manufacturing members are in meeting the so-called Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)* Net-Zero Standard, targeting net-zero manufacturing facilities by 2030, and across the company’s entire supply chain by 2039. Off the Engine Rails: Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator Recall

Ford Motor Company has sent dealers a so-called “New Vehicle Demonstration / Delivery Hold”* covering 2022 Lincoln Aviator and Ford Explorer vehicles. The engine rails may have been improperly heat-treated. This means affected Aviator and Explorer SUVs fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 208, “Occupant Crash Protection” and 301, “Fuel System Integrity.”

In the latest example of quality being off the rails at Ford, an engine rail may detach and contact the road while driving, increasing the risk of a crash. The unsafe vehicles were built in Chicago during April and May of this year. Continue reading

IIHS: Federal Rule On Truck Under-Ride Inadequate

Ken Zino of AutoInformed.com on IIHS: Federal Rule On Truck Underride Inadequate

“IIHS crash testing has shown it’s possible to design guards that can withstand crashes with a narrow overlap, but the new rule does not require such testing,” said IIHS President David Harkey.

The IIHS said today that the National Highway Safety Administration’s announcement of an updated rule for rear under-ride protection on large trucks is an ineffective approach.

“In its long-awaited rule on truck under-ride protection, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) appears to be out of sync with the Safe System strategy adopted by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) earlier this year. Continue reading

Demand Greater than Supply during June in US

Ken Zino of AutoInformed.com on Demand Greater than Supply during June in US

New US light-vehicle sales in June 2022 were down year-over-year and barely up from last month. June 2022’s SAAR of 13 million units was down 16% compared with June 2021, but up 2.3% compared with May 2022. June’s sales brought the second-quarter SAAR to a total of 13.4 million units, a decrease from the first quarter’s 14.1 million. According to Wards Intelligence, inventory at the start of June 2022 was down 25% year-over-year and was less than a third of the pre-pandemic level.

“The shortage of microchips continues to limit vehicle production, but it’s not the only hurdle. Numerous other supply chain disruptions have limited OEM production, and many OEMs continue to nearly complete their vehicles and park them while they await chips. Unfortunately, these supply chain issues will continue to limit new-vehicle production, inventory and sales levels for the rest of the year,” said Patrick Manzi, chief economist of the National Automobile Dealers Association.
