Too Darn Hot – Ford Mustang Mach-E Recall

Sudden power loss or no start. Where’s the “stop driving until fixed” recommendation?

Ford Motor Company is recalling all 48,924 2021-2022 Mustang Mach-E vehicles in the US. The high-voltage battery main contactors may overheat, melt and fail causing a sudden power loss in the worst case. The potentially unsafe vehicles were built in Mexico (Cuautitlan) May 27, 2020 through May 24, 2022. Ford has a software update in process so that dealers can update the on-board software, free of charge as required by law.

On recalled Mustangs, Direct Current (“DC”) fast charging and repeated-wide open accelerator pedal movements can cause the high-voltage battery main contactors to overheat. This overheating can lead to arcing and deformation of the electrical contact surfaces, which can result in an electric relay switch remaining open or one that welds itself closed from heat. Ford has not thus far issued instructions to stop driving the vehicles under this safety recall?

Safety Performance of Advanced Vehicle Technologies Murky

Ken Zino of AutoInformed.com on NHTSA Releases Data on Safety Performance of Advanced Vehicle Technologies

What is advertised or claimed may not be what the software does and what non-computerized people do while driving.

The Department of Transportation’s efforts to increase roadway safety through innovation took a bumpy off-road turn yesterday when the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published the initial round of data collected through its Standing General Order of last year.*

The crashes, which automakers and operators reported to NHTSA from the time the SGO was issued last June, are clearly important. They provide NHTSA with direct information about crashes that occur with vehicles that have various levels of automated driving systems deployed at least 30 seconds before a crash occurred.** Continue reading

Europe’s Diesel Addiction Continues Starting with Germany

Ken Zino of AutoInformed.com on Europe’s Deadly Diesel Addiction Continues

Western European diesel car sales in May were 165,000. This was “in a depressed market that is suffering not only from supply issues, but perhaps starting to feel the beginnings of a consumer slowdown, although that is thought to be a relatively minor part of the problem as the order backlog remains significant,” the respected LMC Automotive* consultancy said today.

Germany, Europe’s largest diesel car market, saw only barely detectable YoY fall in share at -2.1 percentage points with diesel hybrid accounting for 5.8% of all sales and 22% of diesel sales (all diesel share was 26.1%, pure diesel share was 20.3%, according to the KBA. Continue reading

General Motors (NYSE GM) today announced it will invest $81 million into the company’s Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, to prepare the campus to build the Cadillac CELESTIQ, which wil be the brand’s flagship. The investment will be used to purchase and install related equipment to hand-build the CELESTIQ. Campus renovation work has already begun.

Actual details of what GM is going to sell and lease are scant. CELESTIQ’s roof is “expected to be one of the first” to feature a four-quadrant, suspended-particle-device smart glass. With this smart glass, each occupant of the vehicle can set their own level of roof transparency. The driver and front-seat passenger will enjoy a pillar-to-pillar freeform display with active privacy to help mitigate driver distraction, GM said. Supply constrictions remain the major issue for the automotive industry, with makers unable to meet demand in most regions. In year-over-year comparison terms, sales were down 10%. In China, the reopening of manufacturing facilities in mid-April supported a rebound in sales for a moment. In the US, the industry is beset with problems, many of them self-inflected, including record high transaction prices, low inventory, and low incentives.

Le Mans 2022 – Toyota, Porsche, Jota, Aston Martin Win

Ken Zino of AutoInformed.com on Le Mans 2022 - Toyota, Porsche, Jota, Aston Martin Win Classes

After heart-breaking loses from mechanical failures, human persistence pays off once again. That’s why it’s called endurance racing.

Toyota Gazoo Racing brought its winning record at LeMans to an extraordinary total of five this year in the top Hypercar class. The number of kilometers traversed by the winning #8 Toyota GR010 Hybrid was 5,177.17 at an average of 215.4 kph or 380 laps (nine more than in 2021).

The Japanese manufacturer’s victory was almost assured once the race started at 16:00 on Saturday. The n8 Hypercar started in pole position following Hartley’s late, late lap in Thursday evening’s Hyperpole session. The two Toyota GR010-Hybrids steadily traded the top two positions until Sunday morning when the n7 car pitted for an engine reset. The n8 car showed remarkable consistency throughout to claim the 24 Hours of Le Mans trophy. Continue reading

Milestones – 20 years of Porsche Cayenne SUVs

Ken Zino of AutoInformed.com on 20 years of Porsche Cayenne SUVs

Porsche in the 1990s found itself in economic crisis as global tastes in vehicles began a transition to trucks that goes on to this day. Porsche was in the red and delivered only 23,060 cars during the 1991/92 financial year. With the Boxster, launched in 1996, Porsche began to slowly drive itself away from its crash. However, the legendary 911 and the new mid-engine model alone would not secure its future. Plans for a ‘third Porsche’ began to take shape, albeit initially without a firm decision on the segment.

Ferry Porsche predicted in 1989: “If we build an off-road model according to our standards of quality, and it has a Porsche crest on the front, people will buy it.” He would eventually be right. Since 2002, the Cayenne has been one of the mainstays of the car manufacturer’s global success. Continue reading

Hyundai Motor Group has announced that it will pilot a RoboRide car-hailing service in Gangnam in Seoul, South Korea, using IONIQ 5 battery electric vehicles (BEV) with in-house developed level 4 autonomous driving technology. RoboRide will be the first car-hailing service with autonomous driving vehicles to operate in Gangnam, one of the most congested areas in metropolitan Seoul. (See AutoInformed: SAE Autonomous Driving Levels)

For the ride-hailing experiment, the Group has obtained a temporary autonomous driving operation permit from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) of Korea. It will collaborate with Jin Mobility, a Korean startup operating the artificial intelligence (AI)-powered car-hailing mobility platform ‘i.M.’. Jin Mobility will be in charge of operating the two IONIQ 5 RoboRide units on its i.M application. Continue reading

Cadillac to Return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans After 22 Years

Ken Zino of AutoInformed.com on Cadillac to Return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans After 22 Years

Batmobile or bat out of hell?

Cadillac today revealed its Project GTP Hypercar that shows the third-generation prototype race car from the American luxury brand. During 2023, Cadillac will contest the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the FIA World Endurance Championship, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It was developed by Cadillac Design, Cadillac Racing and Dallara.

The announcement was clearly timed to coincide with this year’s race where Cadillac will watch from the sidelines as Corvettes thunder around the Circuit de La Sarthe. The prototype has a new Cadillac 5.5-liter DOHC engine package working in conjunction with the LMDh common hybrid system. IIHS Says Toyota Tacoma 2022 MY Marginal in Crash Test

Ken Zino of AutoInformed.com on - IIHS Says Toyota Tacoma 2022-MY Marginal in Crash Test

Better but not great…

The 2022 Toyota Tacoma extended cab pickup earned a marginal rating in the passenger-side small overlap front crash test due to heightened injury risks to the front seat passenger, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said today. The crash dummy’s position in relation to the door frame and dashboard after the crash test “indicates that the passenger’s survival space was not maintained well,” IIHS said.

Still, this was an improvement. The marginal rating applies to vehicles built after October 2021, when Toyota modified the rear leaf springs. Vehicles built prior to that date are rated poor. In an earlier test of a vehicle built before the changes, one of the rear leaf springs punctured the fuel tank, resulting in a fire risk and an automatic downgrade. Continue reading

Le Mans Qualifying Practice – Rain, Red Flag and Racing

Record book running starts tomorrow. Click to Enlarge.

It’s not surprising here that weather played a factor in today’s qualifying practice session at LeMans. Nor is it surprising here that Kamui Kobayashi set the pace 3m27.247s in the hour-long session. However, real record-book racing starts tomorrow. The No.7 Toyota Gazoo Racing driver set his fastest lap in the dry first 30-minutes of the session before a red flag and then pouring rain nullified affected any improvements in Hypercar or any other class. Aftermarket Services Beat Dealers Again in Latest Survey

Ken Zino of AutoInformed.com on Aftermarket Services Beat Dealers Again in Latest Survey

Confirming decades upon decades of surveys and consumer purchasing patterns, J.D. Power said today that the ease of doing business with aftermarket service providers key advantage over franchised new-vehicle dealers. Because of the nature of the survey smaller independent repair shops are not included.

According to the  2022 U.S. Aftermarket Service Index (ASI) StudySM, dealer service facilities hold an advantage in consumer one exception: customers say aftermarket service providers are easy to do business with – outperforming dealer service facilities specific to general maintenance, tire replacement and oil change services.
