Commerce to Make $3B Economic Development Investment

Today, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo announced that the Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) will implement a series of programs called Investing in America’s Communities to invest the $3 billion it received from President Biden’s American Rescue Plan Act to fund communities for the future. The EDA investment is the largest economic development initiative from the Department of Commerce in decades.

“President Biden’s American Rescue Plan delivered direct relief to the American people and was the first step to energizing the American economy following the devastating impacts of the coronavirus pandemic,” said Secretary Raimondo. “Now, its medium-term investments will allow communities around the country not only rebuild but re-imagine their economy for the future.” First announced on April 14, the plan has faced Republican opposition obstructionism because it apparently helps the working class and is that their usual program of ultra-rich welfare. Argo AI, Ford to Launch Self-Driving Vehicles on Lyft Network

Ken Zino of AutoInformed.com on Argo AI and Ford to Launch Self-Driving Vehicles on Lyft Network by End of 2021Argo AI, Lyft and Ford Motor Company said today are working together to commercialize autonomous ride hailing at scale. The collaboration in theory provides all of the ingredients necessary to create a viable autonomous ride hailing service. These include self-driving technology, a vehicle fleet and transportation network needed to support what’s hoped to be a growing business and satisfied riders. (Lyft and Motional to Deploy Fully Self-Driving Vehicles in 2023, Volkswagen, Argo AI to Start Autonomous Driving Tests, Milestones: Volkswagen Completes Promised Argo AI Funding, Ford and Austin Launch Mobility Challenge Program, Ford Smart Mobility, Zotye Ink MOU on Chinese Ride Hailing)

Argo AI and Ford will deploy Ford self-driving cars, with safety drivers, on the Lyft network, as part of a network access agreement, with passenger rides beginning in Miami later this year and in Austin starting in 2022.  As vehicles are positioned, Lyft users within the defined service areas will be able to select a Ford self-driving vehicle to hail a ride. “This initial deployment phase will lay the groundwork for scaling operations, as the parties are now working to finalize agreements aiming to deploy at least 1,000 autonomous vehicles on the Lyft network, across multiple markets over the next five years,” the companies claimed.

To support self-driving vehicle deployments at scale, Ford has established a presence in Miami, Austin and Washington, D.C. This includes operations to support commercial fleets, including fueling, servicing and cleaning. Ford says it also has established community relationships, including “working closely with city leaders to provide valuable mobility solutions to meet their unique needs.”

The collaboration is designed to scale autonomous vehicle deployment using market and safety data that helps define where self-driving technology can safely serve consumers. As part of the agreement, Argo will use anonymized service and fleet data from Lyft to overcome the challenges faced by other autonomous vehicle companies by focusing on where they can build a sustainable business and validate deployment through localized safety data. In addition, Lyft will receive 2.5% of the common equity of Argo AI as part of the licensing and data access agreements to collaborate on the safe commercialization of autonomous vehicles.

“Argo and Ford are currently piloting, mapping and preparing for commercial operations of autonomous vehicles in more cities than any other AV collaboration, and this new agreement is a crucial step toward full commercial operations – the addition of Lyft’s world-class transportation network,” said Scott Griffith, CEO, Ford Autonomous Vehicles & Mobility Businesses. “These three companies share a belief that autonomous vehicles will be a key enabler for a cleaner, safer and more efficient urban mobility landscape. This is the beginning of an important relationship between three dynamic companies ultimately aiming to deliver a trusted, high-quality experience for riders in a multi-city large scale operation over time.”

Recalls – Roof Rail Air Bag Shrapnel on 410,019 GM Pickups

General Motors is recalling 2015-2016 GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, 3500, and Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks. The roof-rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator, or the inflator sidewall may rupture. A separated inflator end cap or inflator rupture can allow compressed gas to escape, resulting in the end cap or other components being propelled into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or crash from what is in effect shrapnel.

This shrapnel recall supersedes NHTSA recall number 20V-736. GM’s number for this recall is N202324251. Parts are not currently available, but when parts are available, dealers are to replace suspect left and right side RRAB modules. GM vehicles included in recall 20V736 (N202309680/N202309681/ N202309682) be closed under that recall number and addressed under this recall campaign. Ongoing COVID Related Problems Just Discovered. Michigan Experiencing Increase in Legionnaires’ Disease?

Ken Zino of AutoInformed.com on COVID-19 and newly discovered related problems

It would appear prudent to wear a mask inside.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) said this afternoon that it is coordinating with local health departments across the state to investigate a recent increase in reports of Legionnaires’ disease. Confirmed cases include 19 in Wayne County, 17 in Oakland County and in the City of Detroit and 15 in Macomb County.

As many buildings are currently reopening after extended COVID-19 closures or periods of limited use, this may also create an environment for potential amplification and transmission of Legionella bacteria. Between 1 July 1 and 14 July 107 cases of Legionnaires’ disease have been reported in 25 counties. Continue reading

Riding off into runaway global warming.

Volkswagen of America announced today that it will end assembly of the Passat sedan in Chattanooga with model year 2022, part of the plant’s conversion to build future electric vehicles. EU Gets Tougher on Climate Change – Wants All EVs by 2035

Ken Zino of AutoInformed.com on Global Warming and CO2

It’s time to stop whistling past the CO2 graveyard.

The European Climate Law adopted in June 2021 transforms the European Green Deal’s political commitment to EU climate neutrality by 2050 into a binding obligation for the EU and member states. It increases the EU’s target for reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030 from 40% to at least 55%, compared to 1990 level. Yesterday the Commission’s top executive branch presented its “Fit for 55 in 2030” package to align EU climate and energy policies and ensure the achievement of the more ambitious reduction target for 2030. (AutoInformed on EU Parliament Confirms Deal on Climate Neutrality by 2050, Environmental About Face – General Motors Ditching Internal Combustion Engines by 2035. Carbon Neutral by 2040?CARB Warns of Toxic Metal Contaminants in Smoke from Fires, Ford Sets New Interim Carbon-Neutral Targets. Greenwash?)

Let the adverse lobbying begin by the plump, wealthy sacred cows of the polluting establishment – including countries such as Germany with a strong carbon-based economy and its global auto industry – who face butchering by increasing market incentives for consumers to force them to speed the move away from fossil fuels as not only the climate clearly heating up and changing – deadly floods in Germany and Belgium, as well as floods and fires in the Americas, scorching temperatures globally – but the political climate is heating up to do more now over what is clearly the growing negative effects of runaway climate change. Ken Zino of AutoInformed.com on Explorer Recalls

Dave Schoch, then CEO Ford China, at the Chinese Explorer Launch in 2012.

Ford Motor Company today announced three safety recalls in North America on popular and highly profitable F-Series pickups, as well as Explorer and Aviator SUVs. In a release Ford said there are six allegations of injury related to the safety defects in North America. (Ford F-Series Recalls for Windshield Ejections, Wrong Labels, Ford Recalls 2017 Takata Airbag Inflators on F-Series, Mustang!, Shift Indicators Bad on Ford F-Series, Lincolns, Mustangs, Two New Safety Recalls at Ford Motor – F-Series and Explorer)

The largest recall and the one with associated injury claims covers 2013-2017 Ford Explorer vehicles that may experience a seized cross-axis ball joint. Ford is issuing this safety recall for approximately 774,696 2013-2017 Ford Explorer vehicles that may experience a seized cross-axis ball joint that may cause a fractured rear suspension toe link. Affected vehicles may experience a clunk noise, unusual handling, or a misaligned rear wheel. Fracture of a rear toe link significantly diminishes steering control, increasing the risk of a crash. MILITEM Ferōx Adventure – Status or Expensive Jeep?

Ken Zino of Auto Informed.com on the 2021 MILITEM Ferōx Adventure

The new MILITEM Ferōx Adventure either represents the latest and finest in Monza based firms “American tech/Italian made” philosophy or an expensive $94,043 to $98,080 (plus VAT!) Jeep Wrangler JL package depending on your point of view, which will be higher because of the installed lift kit. After the Principality of Monaco, distribution partners for the brand are set to follow in Germany, Czech Republic and Poland.

The MILITEM Ferōx is based on the 4-door Wrangler JL. It has a 2.0-liter 272 horsepower petrol engine or a 3.6 V6 e-Torque Mild Hybrid, producing 285 CV. A 2-door version is offered with a 3.6 V6 and an e-Torque engine. The e-Torque Mild Hybrid system uses 48 V generator and recuperates and stores energy during braking. This is then used to start the Jeep when in start-stop mode and to provide more torque when overtaking, reducing fuel consumption and emissions, it’s claimed. All versions of the Jeep are fitted with 4WD and an 8-speed automatic transmission. The original reason for purchasing Jeep under the Iacocca at Chrysler regime is once again proven – Jeep is an international brand subject to local tastes, as well as commercial exploitation.

IndustriALL – Organizing the Growing Battery Supply Chain

Ken Zino of Auto Informed.com on IndustriALL Organizing the Battery Supply Chain

With widespread workers rights’ violations and low union participation, IndustriALL, a global union umbrella organization, has been warily looking at the increase in battery demand during the next ten years. No surprise that IndustriALL and affiliates have started developing a strategy for workers along the supply chain. The question is can they make positive changes for the people who often do the work in a world were the non-tax paying rich rig the political, legal and social systems against them?

On 28 and 29 June, IndustriALL affiliates joined a workshop to discuss the next steps in developing a strategy on battery supply chains. With the demand for electric cars rapidly increasing, the project will focus on the auto industry. Organized workers are common of course at many auto manufacturers, but it decreases down the supply line. The further you get from the end product the smaller health and safety protections are in play. IndustriALL says its global networks will be central to the work, with increased cooperation between the different sector networks along the supply chain. Continue reading
