EPA Rejects Alabama Coal Ash Management Plan
Coal ash is a byproduct of burning coal in coal-fired power plants that, without proper management, can pollute waterways, groundwater, drinking water, and the air. Parts Maker Sinister Diesel to Pay $1 Million After Guilty Plea
The defendant is scheduled to be sentenced in the criminal case by US District Court Judge John A. Mendez for the Eastern District of California on 14 November 2023. Although Sinister Diesel agreed to pay a $500,000 criminal fine under its plea agreement, the company faces – for each count – a maximum fine of $500,000 or twice the gross pecuniary gain derived from the offense. Its sentence will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of all applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which consider a number of variables. USDOT Proposes 58 MPG Fuel Economy Standard
The US Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration today issued a proposal to update fuel economy standards for passenger cars and light trucks. The “preferred alternative” among several in NHTSA’s proposal includes a 2% per year improvement in fuel efficiency for passenger cars and a 4% per year improvement for light trucks beginning in model year 2027. This increases through model year 2032, potentially reaching an average fleet fuel economy of 58 miles per gallon by 2032. However, NHTSA notes that real word fuel economy is ~20-30% lower than estimated CAFE fuel economy.* Continue reading

EPA Propose Tougher Air Emissions Reporting Requirements

Significantly, by the end of September, NCM will discontinue production of gasoline lawnmowers “due to market forces” such as stricter environmental regulations and shifting customer preferences to become the sole producer of Honda ATVs in North America,allowing SCM to expand Honda side-by-side production of Pioneer and Talon sports models. Consumer Rights Nil in New Autonomous Vehicle Bills?
The Center for Auto Safety says one of the proposals, the SELF DRIVE Act, “neglects to include any consumer protections that prevent the use of binding arbitration clauses in contracts involving autonomous vehicles.” As is common in Washington the legislation is misleadingly named. However, there is a need to explore the issue as there are arguments on many aspects of technology and systems that can save lives and reduce traffic congestion even though AutoInformed remains skeptical about the ability of politicians to do so with a regard for We the People as opposed to We the Congress who are paid large sums by corporate interests. Perhaps more significant though is that battery electric vehicles took a 15.1% market share, outselling tax-favored diesel vehicles. Bosch Starts Mass Production of a Fuel-Cell Power Module
“Bosch knows its way around hydrogen, and Bosch is growing with hydrogen, “said Bosch chair Stefan Hartung. Bosch is spending ~€2.5 billion in H2 technology from 2021 to 2026. Bosch is active in the whole hydrogen value chain, developing technology for its production and application.
