Suniva,* the largest and oldest U.S. manufacturer of high-efficiency mono-crystalline silicon solar cells and Heliene,** a supplier of North American-made solar PV modules, have announced a three-year strategic sourcing contract. Under its terms, Heliene will incorporate Suniva’s U.S.-made solar cells into its U.S.-made solar modules, with market availability beginning in mid-2024. Heliene’s modules will be the first crystalline solar modules with a U.S.-made solar cell. This contract is the result of solar project owners’ and developers’ desire for their projects to qualify for the 10% Domestic Content Bonus Investment Tax Credit, which can be obtained by using U.S. made cells based on The U.S. Department of Treasury’s guidance published in May 2023.

“With this strategic partnership Heliene and Suniva are well-positioned to rapidly scale domestic cell and module manufacturing to meet the surging demand for secure and reliable domestically made crystalline PV modules. Currently, all U.S.-made solar crystalline modules use only imported cells. This partnership will directly address that gap in the U.S. solar supply chain and help strengthen manufacturing capacity to meet increased demand for domestic products,” the companies said in a joint released timed to coincide with a visit by Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen at Suniva yesterday. Continue reading

Home EV Charging More Satisfying Than Public Charging

Ken Zino of AutoInformed.com on Home EV Charging More Satisfying Than Public Charging

Home charging offers a much more satisfying experience for electric vehicle owners when compared with public charging, according to the J.D. Power 2024 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Home Charging StudySM, released today. Thus the EV experience is similar to bathroom satisfaction in AutoInformed’s view.

“Home charging is the most satisfying aspect of owning an EV [footnote 1], which is why all parties in the EV ecosystem need to take the necessary steps to ensure that residential charging is available for current and potential EV owners alike,” said Brent Gruber, executive director of the EV practice at J.D. Power. Incentives and programs are also available to offset the cost of charger installations, upgrades and management of ongoing charging costs, but too few EV shoppers are taking advantage of these offerings. The industry needs to do a much better job with consumer education and awareness, and dealers are certainly in the best position to fill that role at a local level.” Continue reading

Chattanooga VW Workers Want UAW Election

Ken Zino of AutoInformed.com on Chattanooga VW Workings Want UAW Election

Making America great again.

Auto workers at Volkswagen’s plant in Chattanooga, the only VW plant anywhere with no method of employee representation, have filed with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) for a union election. Tennessee is a “right to work” (for less?) state, which means workers don’t have to be unionized. A large majority of workers in the plant signed union cards in 100 days. Chattanooga is Volkswagen’s only U.S. assembly plant and employs more than 4000 autoworkers.

“Today, we are one step closer to making a good job at Volkswagen into a great career,” said Isaac Meadows, a production team member in assembly. “Right now, we miss time with our families because so much of our paid-time-off is burned up during the summer and winter shutdowns. We shouldn’t have to choose between our family and our job. By winning our union and a real voice at Volkswagen, we can negotiate for more time with our families.” Continue reading
